I do think the Mario franchise could have been successful had Mario been another type of tradesman (I assume some type of blue-collar job probably made him more relatable; not to mention a white-collar job presumably wouldn’t have translated well to possible game mechanics of that era).
A construction worker would probably make the most sense (after all, the setting of Donkey Kong was a construction site).
And the reason I’d say it would still be successful is that the gameplay was significantly better than anything that had come before it! And with the right choice of an alternate profession, that core gameplay would have remained intact.

Now, if the question is would this alternate Mario franchise be AS successful as the one we know and love? That I’m not so sure! That’s like asking me if the James Bond franchise would be as successful if he didn’t have a license to kill! He’d still get the job done, but I don’t think it’d be as entertaining (and therefore as successful and enduring).
