Initial review:
Almost perfect, but...
Battle gets a little repetitive
Fast travel unlocked way too late
2.5d hides chests and other pickups, this isn't clever it's just annoying.
Updated review:
While the above thoughts are valid, I don't think it's quite enough to say this isn't worth 5 stars. It's a 5-point scale; you shouldn't need to be perfect to get the full grade.
Play this game if:
You love 90s/16-bit era JRPGs. They perfectly understood the assignment and executed as well as I think anyone could. I enjoyed this more than Octopath (1) and on par with the excellent Final Fantasy 4/5/6 Pixel Remasters.
If you've only played modern action-RPGs, you might be a bit off-put by the turn-based combat, though they do have a "press the button with good timing to do extra damage" mechanism to keep your attention. I'd recommend a try-before-you buy if you're not experienced with turn-based RPGs. This isn't even ATB like the afore-mentioned FF titles; this is very much a turn-based game.
I'm considering adding this to the rarified heights of my OSTs list, which if you're seen it, has only 3 entries, and my go-to station for streaming music is Video Game Soundtracks, so I'm a huge fan, I just have demanding standards for that list.

This wasn’t my next game, I still haven’t bought it…it’s on the backlog though!

Ugh. I haven’t finished Octopath traveler 2 and now I want this.

OT2 is on the backlog after I finish Persona 3 Reload, Paper mario TTYD remake, then maybe OT2... unless I finally break down and replay Metroid Dread somewhere in there.
