Honestly, the only playable version is the DS version. Still, easily the worst 3D Mario game.

Easily the worst 3D Mario game is Super Mario 3D World. That's not to say it's a bad game by any means; but it doesn't come close to other 3D Mario titles!

No, I legit think it ranks lower than SM64, Odyssey, Sunshine, and the Galaxy games. It doesn't help that it's not a true 3D game with the fixed camera.
Again, that doesn't mean I didn't enjoy it (heck I beat all but the final 2 levels with every character), but I don't think it compares to the other 5!

@Smeagol - have you played it with a friend and/or a romantic interest? Because that’s really the best way to play 3D World.
It’s crazy to me that anyone would have a bad time playing 3D world. The co-op is soooo superb.

I have zero interest in playing Mario co-op! For me, there’s no better way to ruin Mario than to have to be burdened down by another player!
And again, 3D World is NOT a bad game! I wouldn’t have spent all that time beating all but the final 2 levels with every character if it wasn’t a good game.
However, it still doesn’t compare to other 3D titles for me because it lacks the freedom and exploration of a true 3D Mario game!

I sure wish I had that one. So I’d expect a take like this from a new gamer who was born when the Wii was released but I know you’re really into old school gaming so I am baffled as to why N64 having wonky controls /gameplay / graphics is so surprising. Every N64 game is like this. It’s actually one of the more polished ones out there despite it being a launch title.

Okay, couple things about this. It's not that I didn't know they were wonky. I'm just surprised how terrible it actually is. I've been a record saying the N64/ps1 era does not hold up at all for the most part with the exception of a couple games here and there. For some people to put this as one of their favorite Mario games is baffling since pretty much every single Mario game ever made is a legit 8 out of 10 or higher. Even the so-so ones are still an 8 out of 10 and fun to play. I find zero fun with this one. It's not my skill level! 😂

I agree that gen does not hold up very well. But you kind of have to consider these games are 25-30 years old now. It’s like watching the original Star Wars. The production value of today is not there, but it changed everything.

PLENTY of SNES games hold up. And I think the reason the N64 era doesn't hold up is because that was new technology. It was the polygons. It was 3D. It was the first of its kind trying to do that. So I understand why it doesn't hold up and I wish people would just all agree with me 😂

Yeah but graphically and technology-wise GameBoy games don't "hold up" but they're still fun to play. I think a lot of the N64 and PS1 games aren't even fun to play anymore because they're so janky.

I still replay SM64 from time to time and still have a blast doing so! Same can be said for Banjo-Kazooie and Banjo-Tooie!

My main issue with SM64 is the same one I have with Ocarina:
It takes SO much time to get to the fun. It reminds me of that moment in Clerks 2, where they call out how 50% of the Lord of the Rings movies is just watching people walk. But these games MAKE you do that walking.
It’s like a clever way for you to not realize 50% of your gameplay is essentially an interactive loading screen.
In a nostalgic sense, I get where that was new and fun at the time. But every time I’ve tried to return to these games, I remember why I haven’t returned to these games.

I’m not sure how that applies to SM64. You’re pretty much given 3 worlds and an over world to start with. I feel the fun starts right away.

I’m ok with this take. The 64 was impressive in its time because it was doing something new. The fact that there are better ways to do it and that the old ways don’t hold up shouldn’t be a surprise.
