One of the most overrated games of all time. Not even sure there’s enough space for me to list all the reasons why I think so, but I’ll sum it up with it’s a beautiful world with nothing worthwhile to fill it. Will continue my rant in the comments
1) Story: Every Zelda game before this had a compelling story with a whole cast of memorable characters. In contrast, the only character I remember from this game was that Rito who constantly gave Link grief, cause he was the only one with any personality
1 continued) The story is also really lacking. You wake up in this world that you basically have no connection to since you've been asleep for 100 years, and because of the aforementioned lack of interesting characters you never REALLY build a connection with the world. The most you get are these lame flashbacks where you're basically just told "hey these two characters had a connection isn't that cool!"
2) Shrines. The game does a good job of convincing you that the shrines are interesting and fun, but I realized that after I got enough hearts to get the master sword, and enough stamina to actually be able to move freely around the world, I immediately lost all motivation to do any more. There's just so many of them, and like 1/3 of them are copy / paste tests of strength. The only shrine that really stood out to me was the one where you paraglide over to that island and immediately lose all your gear
3) Item system. It's almost cliche to rant about the item system in this game, but the fact that all your items... yes ALL your items (this will come up later) break is just annoying and doesn't serve any purpose but to pad the game play. Especially because once you learn the combat system, all you need to do is spend an hour - an hour and a half picking up the royal claymore and searching for major tests of strength and then you're pretty much set. And when all your weapons are about to break just rinse and repeat after the blood moon or whatever it's called. The other reason I wasn't a fan is that I found myself never using anything except the master sword because I didn't my cool weapons to break
4) Divine beasts. The puzzles are way too linear and easy to figure out. The only one that was even somewhat complicated was the camel beast and that's cause I couldn't find a sphere for one of the lightning puzzles. Not only that, but the rewards just aren't worth it, especially due to the weapon breaking system I brought up earlier
4) continued. Also because the entire game was designed to be completed assuming you never even see a divine beast, there's literally no reason to do any of them aside from making parts of the game easier. So you're literally given everything you need to beat the game within the first hour... what kind of zelda game does that?
5) Last point. There's just way too much busy work in this game. I already mentioned the shrines, and the weapons... but more than 900 korok seeds? Like seriously?
Ok so I've been hating on the game a lot, but what I will say is that the combat is fun at least for a while, and while you're grinding for master sword it is enjoyable to explore the world, but the problem is that you're just given everything you need so early that it kind of just kills the motivation to keep exploring the world since you KNOW that there isn't going to be anything worthwhile
Anyways that's my rant lol. I wish they'd have reduced the size of the world, reduced the number of shrines, and made the shrines themselves much more involved and interesting. I also wish that they made the rewards you get from the divine beasts worthwhile in and of themselves so that we actually have motivation to do them other than "because we can... I guess?"
To summarize, I don't think that BOTW is a bad game, it's just that outside of the art style, the only things I remember about the game are the things that I found lacking. I genuinely don't understand how people think this is one of the best games of all time, when it's not even one of the better Zelda games as far as I'm concerned
