3DO Interactive Multiplayer
1993-10-04
The 3DO Interactive Multiplayer, also referred to as the 3DO System or simply 3DO, is a home video game console developed by The 3DO Company. Conceived by entrepreneur and Electronic Arts founder Trip Hawkins, the 3DO was not a console manufactured by the company itself, but a series of specifications, originally designed by Dave Needle and R. J. Mical of New Technologies Group, that could be licensed by third parties. Panasonic produced the first models in 1993, and further renditions of the hardware were released in 1994 by GoldStar (now LG Electronics), and in 1995 by Sanyo.

3DO Interactive Multiplayer
The bomb of all bombs. The 3DO almost crashed the entire industry again just like Atari in the early 80's. Not really, but imagine! With an insane price point at the time ($700-$1000 at launch), nobody was going to buy this. Even that rich friend you knew that had everything wasn't going to buy this. It flopped and failed so hard. Which is sort of a shame, but Trip Hawkins be trippin'. I've played this at Cons and even trying to get back into that year's mindset I don't think I would have been impressed by it.

(Also, I had a part in a very funny 3DO webseries a few years ago and here's my amazing performance from episode 5. Will definitely recommend watching all quick episodes for a laugh)

3DO Interactive Multiplayer
This could have been something special. If we are just rating the system based on what it could do 5 stars, if we are rating the system on playability 3 stars. What was with the controllers and 2 player abilities? Road Rash ran better on this than it did on the PS1. It's just unfortunate that the system wasn't given the proper attention. Who would buy Disc games? That's crazy!!
