Animal Crossing New Horizons on its own would be 4 stars due to the lack of content and features that were present in past games that are no longer available. HOWEVER, with the introduction of the Happy Home Paradise DLC, the game earns back its lost points with new types of content and a ton of new homes to build for your favorite (and least favorite villagers). I won't get heavy into the details to make sure I don't spoil any content for people thinking about the game, but it will be well worth your time and money to buy if you've enjoyed animal crossing in the past or have a knack for designing your own island civilization.
But even without the DLC, the game is still extremely solid. The new abilities to customize almost EVERY aspect of your island and the amount of control you're given to craft the island of your dreams is phenomenal. I've never had more fun designing homes than in this game due to the heavy customization options you get for every little design and detail you can think of. The new custom pattern options are the cherry on top with brand new ability to make a large variety of clothing options and the creation tools only making it more satisfying.
The only gripe I could truly say I have with the game is the lack of content when it comes to villager interaction. The characters don't have as much personality as the past games and can even be a bit repetitive when it comes to dialogue options. This is only a small complaint though and doesn't take away from the beautiful island that will be yours to terraform to your will.
Overall, 5/5
Try Animal Crossing: New Horizons out. You won't regret it.
