Balatro is subtle. I kept hearing that it's a Rogue-Like Poker Game and I couldn't wrap my head around what that even meant. How do you improve and re-run or change tactics to do something different? How do you buff your weapons or unlock new powers? It's a poker game for God's sake.
I really struggled with my first 4 or 5 runs. I started to see the Rogue-Like elements, but I also started to get that early Rogue-Like frustration. The requirements were difficult for the cards I was pulling, I didn't understand the strategy or even what all of the different power ups really did.
There is probably a site I could go to for help, but I'm not an RTFM guy, I'm a bang-your-head-against-it-until-it-works guy. I could have quit completely about 2 hours in and that's why this gets 4 stars. I don't usually require a lot of hand holding, but a little more training could be helpful.
Once I got past the learning curve and really got the hang of the different cards everything opened up. I started seeing new Joikers and Decks unlock, I figured out card positioning, I started to be able to plan my next rounds ahead of time. I still rarely got past Ante 7 and into 8. It took me about 20 hours of play time (an embarrassing number of rounds) to get my first win. But those 20 hours flew by and I don't see it slowing down anytime soon.
Great game recommendation by the Cr3w! I'm rarely disappointed in games recommended by @laughatbrian @funkstylee or @dan and they hit another home run with this one.

I remember the lightbulb going off for the first time when I realized left to right placement for both Jokers and played hands is essential.

You can change the order of the cards in the played hands? That makes so much sense. You can reorder the held cards at the bottom too, can't you? Dude...now I need to get home to play some more.
(edited)
Or just buy it on mobile and say bye-bye to your entire day?😁

I'm so glad I got it on switch where it won't do that to me, and I refuse to buy it again on mobile

Yeah just rearrange your hand so the card you want played first is left. There might be another way but that's what I do. This doesn't matter a lot but when it does, it's crucial

@dennis I dare say it is essential to order how your hand is played, especially with effects like first card played playing 2x extra. You can really blow scores out of the water. Same with making sure your X multiplier jokers are on the right so they are hit last after the other multipliers clear.

I would agree with @dan on this one. Once I realized you could reorganize your jokers so that your X Mults happen after your + Mults it made a huge different mathematically. If you can do the same thing in your played hand, you can get all of the X Mults at the end and really bump your score.

Don't be embarrassed. Probably took me about 50 times to get my first actual win past ante 8. Glad you're liking it!

I would agree with that? They could do a little better with tutorial, but once it clicks you are hooked. I also agree that @laughatbrian @dan and @funkstylee give the best game recommendations

Not sure why the first sentence is a question haha, but I can’t edit it so I’ll just leave it

I think every single person has this experience when playing this game. I played the demo months and months ago and thought it was pretty cool but thought it was a little too hard. But then when I got it again I was like, as Dan said, something snaps inside you and you're like, "Oh now I get it" and every run is different which is amazing. You can do so many different things and so many different strategies with this game. If you want to keep going with this type of game I will recommend @inscryption until the day I die. It's amazing.
