Arcades were places I visited whenever I went to the beach growing up. It was a heaven to me. Got a bit more often now, especially at Dave & Busters, but arcades still are just as fun & enjoyable as when I was a kid.
A system that I never owned but played at a friends house. Played a lot of Sonic, Crazy Taxi, and Football 2k5 which some to believe the best football game ever. It had a lot of potential but I think at this point the market & Sega were going different directions. This wasn't a very popular system to have in my area of the world.
Honestly, my only PC gaming was done in my youth where I played some NHL game and some racing game where I always used a McLaren. I can understand why people would prefer PC over console, but I never got bit by the bug. Even once tried playing Fortnite on kb&m ... I'll stick to a controller! haha
A system I never owned, but played a lot at a friends house. Seeing the size of the game discs compared to the PlayStation's was shocking to me (more funny) but never played enough to figure out just how I'm supposed to operate this controller. It looks simple & I imagine had I owned one that I would've gotten it over time, but just never did.
I thought I loved the PlayStation. Then the PlayStation 2 came out. It was sleek, futuristic looking, the starting screen/noises. I played this system so much that I had trouble letting go to get a PS3. I don't recall if the analog sticks came out during the PlayStation's run but having the feature on the PS2 was so dope to me, and I definitely abused the sticks playing NCAA football or racing. I also believe this was my introduction to online gaming as I remember getting the port hook up to the back of the system to play Madden & SOCOM online.
Another system I don't recall much of, but playing Paperboy, Mario, and even Duck Hunt on this growing up is a memory of mine. Nights my parents would host people over & I wanted to show people my (probably terrible) duck hunting skills hahah
I never saw this console anywhere else other than my grandparents house. Any time I had to stay the night there, or we visited, I did what I could to be able to play Super Mario or Donkey Kong Country. This system, while I never owned it, holds that nostalgia value to me as I looked at it as something to relate with my grandparents.
Remember playing this at a friends for the first time. Granted, I had a PlayStation so going from only having 2 controllers (before the "V" hook up to add multiplayer) to having 4 was a game changer. Having an N64 was the system to have when I was growing up for Mario Kart, NFL Blitz, WCW/nWo, and so many other games we played late into the nights during summer breaks. Still even a solid console to have & play today!
I honestly don't remember any game I had for this except for one: Pokemon (Yellow). With everything I do now, this is when mobile gaming really started for me. This made being in the car more enjoyable & sometimes I had hoped for longer rides just to continue playing. Having the cord too to be able to trade Pokemon was the best (at that time)!
Halo. That's it. My brother & I played Halo once at my cousins & next think you knew, my parents were buying him an Xbox. We didn't do much more with it as we weren't OG's to the online playing thanks to the lack of internet service at my parents house, but this was such a great system to have even with the little games my brother owned. Thankfully we didn't have to play with that largue, bulky controller too much once things were slimmed down.
Another system that I traveled with, but less distance. My friends and I spent so many hours playing Modern Warfare 2 on the 360 & I luckily never dealt with the red ring of death ... wait, no. I did. My system was so old by that point though I didn't mind buying the new slim model after it came out. At this point in time though, I didn't think that Microsoft could do wrong with their consoles & they definitely continue to impress with the consoles that they release.
Sometimes I think this system was ahead of it's time when I compare the Switch feature of handheld & docking but also lacked cloud gaming. When I think about it, this was just PlayStation's version of the GameBoy which was plenty of fun, took my PSP with me to play games between classes in college, but having to buy a game for console then another copy for the PSP was expensive over time. At it's current time though, definitely was a lot of fun to have!
Honestly, I only ever owned this system (that I luckily found for purchase online) because of Wii Sports. Super important to keep the wrist strap on as there were a handful of times where the remote just ... flew away. No one ever took out a tv, thankfully, but this system was a lot of fun with being able to use the motion of the remote. Sometimes I wish I had given it more chances, but this was definitely the perfect system for a barracks full of new soldiers who were without a car & looking to kill some time.
I, admittedly, was a PlayStation fanboy all the way up until PS3. The only real memories I have of it are playing Madden and NCAA games, racing games, and the fact that I bought two PS3's, both of them died due to a laser issue where discs could no longer be read, so I switched to xbox and that was the end of my time with PlayStation.
Remember this came out while I was in Korea & was the first purchase I made when I got back to America (the store on post couldn't keep them in stock long enough in Korea). I was blown away by the overlays, how smooth everything ran, the capabilities that it possessed. Before owning a Switch, I used to take my xbox with me in a backpack everywhere for gaming or just to be able to watch movies whenever we were traveling. Having a dedicated console at home is nice, but as a dad who often loses the tv to whatever the family wants to watch or my wife wanting to watch something, I started to spend less and less time playing (which sucked). I know the cloud gaming is coming around, which I started to get into, but lost interest in after getting a Switch.
This is going to be a long, random post: I was not a believer in the Switch. Did not think it, overall, it could contend with Xbox or Playstation. I turned down a Switch to continue playing Fortnite on my phone with my Xbox controller. No way it's any good, probably a solid thought by Nintendo but not for me. Then Apple vs Epic happened. Then I went on a work trip with a friend who let me play Mario Kart. I couldn't stop thinking about what I saw, how beautiful it was, how smooth it was. Over time, I finally found a Switch that I got "for the kids" & then another Switch so both kids had one and now we have 3 Switches. Since we've moved back to America, I haven't even attempted to hook my Xbox back up as the Switch with dock and handheld functions do everything for me that I need as someone who enjoys sitting on the couch & gaming but loves to game while on the go!
First system owned that wasn't in house before I was born. Dude, I loved this system. This system was actually where my love for gaming started out. I remember getting it for my 7th birthday & it was the last one in stock. All I wanted to do was play this game & going back through the titles list, so many memories brought back that started with this system. So many nights I was up later than I should have been just in my own gaming world. I can still, to this day, see the start up in my head.
