Kudos to Nintendo for making the first “Oculus” (albeit you had to lay on the floor prone to use it) but the games were limited and the red lines are probably the reason I needed glasses at 13 years old and continue to have to wear them now.
I always wonder how a new console is going to beat the graphics from its previous version and this one is a huge step above the PS4. I had one of the OG PS4 consoles and it needed an upgrade so I lucked out on getting on through some online digging right after it came out. It did have its share of early release glitches but those have been taken care of. Graphics are solid and on point with a mid-range PC plus the SSD allows for quick game loading.
I was born the same year this system came out and born in the place where the US Nintendo HQ is located, so the NES holds a special place in my heart. This was the system of my childhood. Everyone on my street had one except us…until my dad came home from the Navy Exchange with an NES hidden in a bag. What was cool is my dad nowadays is not a gamer but back then, he loved the NES just as much as we did, even threatening us from touching the system while he had his game of Mario paused so the neighbor could help him. The long lifespan of the system meant lots and lots of great games and this groundbreaking system is one that will always live on.
This system may not have taken off like it could have but I would consider it Sega’s “Wii”. It may not have competed with the N64 and PS at the time but the controller screen did add some value, especially with sports games as you could select your plays without your partner seeing. Also Sega at the time still had some big name titles that benefitted from the system upgrade. Unfortunately Sega was already on a downhill at this point and the system didn’t get the shelf life it could’ve had.
I thought initially that this was going to be a gimmick but boy I was wrong. You get immersed in the games and it is definitely not for those who get dizzy. The Walking Dead game is one of my favorites and Beat Saber gives you a workout. They are getting more big-name titles to the console but there definitely isn’t the depth you would get from one of the big 3 consoles.
