StarCraft II
My biggest complaint about StarCraft 2 was that they split the game into three full price games when it was released. It was such a disgusting money grab that I stayed away from the game for a bit. When I did get the game, while good, it just didn't feel like it had the magic that the first one had. Some of the new units were fun, but even multiplayer fell sorta flat for me. The story wasn't bad, but again, having to pay full price for three games wasn't worth it. Not a bad game, but also it's not the original.

Starcraft
Once upon a time I thought Command and Conquer was the best RTS game and nothing could be better. Then I was introduced to StarCraft. This game (specifically with the Brood War expansion) was my favorite PC game through all of high school. I had many many nights playing until 3 in the morning. Three factions all distinctly different and fun to play (though for me fun is used very loosely when it comes to the Terrans...). The single player campaign was a lot of fun, had a good story, but the game shines in multiplayer. From sweaty 1v1s, so ridiculous custom games where you can play through the DBZ story, online had everything. My favorite was always setting up a 7v1 comp stomp with 5 other friends, and then turning on the rando who showed up for an easy win. Was it terrible trolling behavior? Yes. Do I regret the hilarious reactions and situations is caused? Not even a little. My official non negotiable ranking for the races is #1 Zerg, #2 Protoss, #10 Terran

Black & White (2001)
I loved this game when it came out. You play as a god with the goal of gaining followers and defeating Nemesis. You can perform various miracles for your villagers like producing food or throwing fireballs. You have an area of influence that you cannot work outside of, and can increase that area by converting more followers. As you progress your choices affect how your hand (basically the cursor you use to interact), temple, and avatar look. Do more good, and everything looks Holy and nice. Pick more evil, and things turn dark and scary. As mentioned, you have an Avatar animal that can do things for you. There are a couple options, Ape, Wolf and Tiger that I can think of off the top of my head. One of the best things about this game, and a thing that earned it a lot of praise, was the ability to teach your avatar. There was a leash you could put on it that basically put it in learn mode. It was watch what you did and learn to do the same things. As it was left to do its thing you could reward or punish its behavior to teach it how to behave. So it would learn to help villagers get food etc, while you were off doing other things. There were two other leashes that would prompt it to act benevolently or malevolently depending on what you wanted from it. It really was an impressive system. And your avatar didn't have to match your alignment. You could be a wrath of the divine, burn down a village type fiery, but your avatar was helpful and kind to help the villagers recover. It was a really great game, and now I really want to play it again. oh! And I included a link to the song that has lived in my head for over 20 years. Enjoy!

Sonic & Knuckles
This is the pinnacle of the Sega Genesis. Sonic & Knuckles was a great stand alone game where you could play as Sonic or Knuckles, and depending on which you choose, get a different story. But where this game really shines is its lock on technology. You can flip open a cover on it and plug another genesis game in. Made specifically with Sonic 3 in mind, this unlocked the ability to play through both games as one. And by doing so you could also get Super Emeralds to surpass Super Sonic/Tails/Knuckles and become Hyper Sonic/Tails/Knuckles. In addition to Sonic 3, you could pop Sonic 2 on and play through that game as Knuckles. Any other Genesis game would give you a special stage to play and the original Sonic would let you play all the variations. This game gave so much content, and it was all fun. And the absolute best part? Plugging the game genie in, then Sonic and knuckles, and then Sonic 3 on top of that for one epic tower of gaming perfection (picture in comments).

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater
The best skating game with the best soundtrack. Nothing will ever recapture the feeling of flying through the air and doing tricks while Superman plays in the background. This game was so much fun, and it was easy to pick up, but challenging enough to keep you coming back to get that new high score. Made me want to skateboard in real life, but I could never get coordinated enough to not just be awkward. Love this game!

Super Mario Odyssey
I really enjoyed this game. It is unfortunately one of my “Made it to the final boss and stopped” games. I’m not sure what made me stop, but I do hope to get back to it one day. It’s a great 3D Mario game. Fun levels, Cappy is a fun addition. And I love being able to get different clothes for Mario to wear.
0
Splatoon 3
Still new to the game, but I’m really enjoying it. The different weapons feel different, play different, and I’m terrible with all but the roller. There is a lot of stuff to get deep into with clothing and the abilities they have. I finally got to play some rounds with the Splat Cr3w, and it made the game even better (even if I was given the third degree in voice chat). Fun game, fun look, fun times.

Cool Spot
I’m going to say that this is the best advertisement made into a game ever made. You control the Spot from 7-Up and travel through a bunch of really cool levels saving other spots. You shoot soda bubbles as an attack and (my favorite part) your health is monitored by a Spot face that gradually falls off the top of the screen as you take damage. A refreshingly (get it?! Because soda?!) fun ad for soda!
0
Vectorman
A 2-D platformer that I had so much fun with. You started with the ability to shoot basic attacks, but could get powerups to change weapons. They also has multipliers you could pick up to increase your damage. You were also able to change forms, helicopters, cars, etc. As a kid this game was so cool. I’m sure it was partly a Sega flex to be “cooler” than Nintendo. Give it a try!

Sonic the Hedgehog 3
Sonic 3 was so great. Knuckles, soundtrack, levels, all of it was so much fun. The chaos emerald levels were dizzying and intense, but fun. I played this Sonic game more than any of the others and would play it again now if I could find my old cartridge.

Crazy Taxi
I wanted to play this game so bad when it came out, but never got the chance. Now, thanks to c3 I was finally able to. And I was underwhelmed. Maybe it’s because it’s an older game now. Maybe it’s the years of waiting to play it and the game didn’t live up to the hype I had for it. But I found it to just be ok. Great soundtrack, fun concept, but I just didn’t enjoy it like I thought I would. Not unplayable, and definitely something to give a try or revisit now and again, but not as good as I hoped/thought it would be.

Stack the Cats
My daughters like this game a lot more than I do. It’s not a bad time waster. You do what the title says, make a stack of cats that are in various positions. The game needs to have less ads to be more enjoyable for me. Getting one after pretty much every round is infuriating, so that’s a big reason the stars suffer. It was great for the weekly challenge that time though!

Among Us
I didn’t play this for very long. When I started the games were fun, and people worked together. But then it turned to everyone for themselves and voting out anyone for any reason. But the concept is a lot of fun. When the games go well, it’s excellent. Gameplay is relatively simple, playing the imposter is probably more stressful for me than worrying about getting taken out by the imposter. Would definitely play again, with a controlled group of people instead of internet randos. Among us Cr3w night perhaps?

Pokémon Smile
Is your kid a Pokemon fan? Do you feel like it would be easier to pull their teeth out than to get them to brush them? This may be your solution! You get to pick your Pokemon friend from Gen 1 and 2 starters plus Pikachu and Eevee. They hang out with you and attack the purple stuff to clean the virtual teeth. It uses the camera to watch you brush. If you’re going to slow it tells you to speed up, it’s got a toothbrush on the bottom that shows where to brush, so it rotates around all the teeth. Built in timer, and the better the brush, the better pokeball they get to catch a pokemon, from standard to master. It then gives a couple photos from the brushing session that you can then add stickers and stuff too. Really a great brushing app for kids.

Ape Out
I think I saw this on a list for great indie games to play or something. So I picked it up. And the list was right. It’s a great game. You’re the titular ape escaping captivity. Top down perspective, silhouette-esque style, played to jazz music. The soundtrack mimics the game, the more chaotic the game gets, the quicker and more frantic the drums of the music gets. It’s such a great experience, top to bottom. Pick it up if you can.
0
Mighty Doom
I wanted to like this game more than I did. It’s very similar to Archero, which I also liked well enough. But the game just doesn’t have sticking power. The gameplay is fun, but very repetitive. The grind is tedious. It makes it hard to come back day to day to keep with it.
0
Words On Stream
Solid three stars. Two of those stars come from hanging out with people while playing. One of the stars comes from not having to buy anything to play. It’s a word scramble that throws hidden letters and fake letters at you to make you feel even dumber when you can’t figure out words. If you are good at word scrambles (I am not), this is a great game for you to play and flex your vocabulary and unscrambling skills.
0
Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock
This was like, 3x the guitar hero that the first one was. Great songs, some stupid difficult to play. But we you beat them, man that felt good. When I hear the songs on the radio, still makes me want to go dig out my guitar and play.
0
Smite
I found this game to be fun right up until it wasn’t. Which is how I feel about most MOBAs. Smite has a neat concept of various gods from various pantheons beating each other up. A lot of the gods have really interesting abilities and flavors and I enjoyed all that. I personally stuck to playing arena with a friend of mine, but even that got real toxic and crappy quick. For me once you get into a constantly changing meta of items to use and think about and change on the fly, it becomes more tedious than fun. But at the end of the day, it’s a MOBA and if MOBAs are your thing, this will fill that craving. MOBAs are not my thing.

Sid Meier's Pirates!
This is the game that every other pirate game hopes to be. Relatively simple gameplay, so it’s easy to jump into without hours of tutorials or anything. Main gameplay breaks down into sailing your ships, ship to ship combat, and then sword fighting enemy captains. You can ally with various nations and their colonies, trading goods and woo-ing governor’s daughters. If you’re really persistent you can even capture a Ship of the Line and rule the Caribbean! I would love to play this again, or see an updated version.
0
Fallout 3
This is the Fallout Game I got the farthest in. Love the gameplay and the characters. I had heard about fallout games before this, but never played any of them before this one, so it was my intro to the series. The game is a great mix of genres, some places verge on horror survival, some parts are lighthearted and funny, others are serious and emotional. And there are so many ways to play it. Excellent game. Give it a try if you haven’t already!

Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe
A blast from my past. This game is the reason I know the names of WWII planes. My dad played this a lot and I’d watch him play. He was always way better at it than me. It was a lot of fun, you got to pick from a bunch of aircraft on either the US or Germany side. Focused on the bombing campaign over Germany you were either escorting bombers or doing the bombing, or you were defending against them. I would very often pick the B-17 and station myself at the left waist gunner since that was my Grandfathers position in the war. They had experimental planes that never saw actual action (to the best of my knowledge) in addition to the classics like the Mustang and Flying Fortress. And there were expansion packs. On floppy discs. My first game with paid extra content. Also pro tip: Autopilot doesn’t keep your bomber in formation while you’re busy shooting down enemy planes like I thought it did as a kid. “Why are all those other planes going the wrong way? Dont they know it’s this way since that’s where my autopilot is bringing me?”

Paper Mario
Do you like Mario? Do you like RPGs? Do you like paper? Then do I have the game for you! And excellent game with a lot of humor and fun gameplay. Mario is off to save the princess again with new friends and new abilities. I love this game, and it’s still great today. It’s also got a whole big franchise to jump into when you realize how great it is!
0
Metroid
The original! I played this on a bonus disc with Metroid Prime. Or as an unlock in Prime, or Prime 2, I don’t remember exactly, but I do know Prime is why and how I played it. The fact that I beat this is a testament to how good it is. I really don’t enjoy playing retro games for the most part, but I played through all of this and all of its back tracking and platforming and boss fights. Such a great game.
0
Rampage
This game needs to be remade, re-released, something. And no silly gimmicks or open world stuff. Just the original gameplay. It was perfect and fun. Love this game.
0
Mario Kart 64
My first Mario Kart game. I played a lot of this with my group of friends in school. Always made sure to use a heavyweight in balloon battle so I could just plow through someone and knock their balloon off. Not the best in the series, but absolutely a core memory for me.
0
The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening (2019)
I’m rating this a little low, but reserving the right to alter it in the future. I had a real hard time getting into this game. I love the art style for the remake, but it felt like I was forcing myself to play it instead of wanting to play it, so I never completed it. I do want to give it another shot since I hear often that it’s one of the best Zelda’s.
0
Super Mario World
Like practically every Mario game, I never finished this one. But what I did play was really great. My cousin’s had it when I was a kid so I’d play it at their house. After that was just playing it on various virtual consoles. A classic that I’d say lives up to its hype.
1
Mario Kart DS
I played a lot of this one. Being handheld gave me the ability to bring it with me wherever and race a course or two. Most importantly is where Dry Bones made its debut as a racer. And I was particularly proud of the Star of Life emblem I made for the game.
0
Luigi's Mansion
I got all the way to the final boss and never finished this game. And I kick myself for that because it’s an excellent game. Giving Luigi his time to shine was great to begin with, but to have a vacuum and a haunted house? Amazing. Love this game and you will too.
0
Metroid Fusion
My first Metroidvania Metroid game. And it was a really solid game. Interesting story, and having hide and run from SA-X brought out the nerves. This game got me to go back and play the older Metroids, and then come back and play it again.
0
Metroid Dread
This one was tough. And not gonna lie, a little scary and nerve wracking. But a great game. Visuals looked gorgeous, soundtrack on point like usual for a Metroid game. Good story, go play it. You won’t regret it. Unless you don’t like Metroid games, in which case you probably will regret it.
0
The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds
Loved this game. Great sequel to Link to the Past. I wasn’t sure about it when I first started, but the story really pulled me. Everything you want in a Zelda game. Now I want to go play it again…
0
Super Metroid
Another game I missed by not having a SNES, but I got into it after playing Metroid Prime. It was such a good game, made me appreciate things in Prime even more. Fun gameplay, great soundtrack. Another classic game worth all the praise it gets.
0
Portal 2
Portal was great. Portal 2 is so much better. The puzzles, the story, the dialogue. It might just be the perfect sequel. Some game series take a few games to hit perfection, but this series got it on the second. Go play this game now. Even if you don’t play Portal first. But play portal first.
0
Trivia
An educational game that’s fun to play! Knowing the answer quickly is a great feeling. Not knowing the answer isn’t that bad because you learn something. Knowing the answer, but not being able to find it because you didn’t study the answers beforehand? That one hurts. STUDY THE ANSWERS!
0
Target
Love this game! And being able to play multiple maps a day is a big plus. Some days I’m great, other days I wish I could say I accidentally clicked in the wrong place. Lots of variety of games to pick from, with new showing up all the time. I’m proud to be one of the folks who gets to set up targets for people to play. Puts a smile on my face seeing a lot of people play the maps I set up and do well on them.
0
Enhance
I am very rarely good at this game, but it’s fun to play. Maybe one day I’ll get the feelin’ lucky tagline, but I’m torn between fishing for it and trying to actually guess the answer for better xp. Love the daily attempt, and I even get to learn about new games some days!
0
Donkey Kong Country
I never had a SNES (that’s S.N.E.S. To be clear) so I’ve only played this on virtual consoles. And I’ve never completed it. That being said, this game is a lot of fun. And has a great soundtrack. So many iconic things came out of this game, definitely a classic that deserves the love it gets.
0
Mario Kart 8
While not my pick for the best Mario Kart (Double Dash holds that honor), but to say it isn’t an excellent Mario Kart is silly. It’s spanned two consoles, and added so much content. It is probably the pinnacle of Mario Karting, all it’s missing is two people per Kart like in Double Dash. This is also the Mario Kart that taught me that I’m not as good as I thought I was. And then the TDG crew taught me I was even worse than that.
0
Super Mario Bros. 3
This is the first Mario game I remember playing at my house. My aunt and uncle got my sister a NES with this game. It definitely gets a star for nostalgia, but it was a fun game to play. Tanooki suit, running behind the stage, Koopa kids, plenty of awesome things in this game.
0
Doom (2016)
This was so much fun to play. While obviously much different than the original, this felt like a Doom game. Lots of baddies to blow up, awesome weapons to use, and just feeling like an absolute badass. The glory kills were a fun addition and really pulled you into combat. Definitely a must play if you’re a fan of Doom games.
0
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
Unlike what seems like everyone else, I was unable to get into this game. I have never finished it. I’m not entirely sure why, on paper it seems like the type of game I’d love to play. It’s a good game, combat works well, skill progression is an interesting change from most RPG games, big world filled with stuff. But apparently it’s just not for me.
0
Metroid Prime 3: Corruption
The final game in the trilogy, it’s the first with motion control since it was released on the Wii. I felt the controls worked really well but didn’t change the feel of the series. The game had an excellent story and conclusion to the series, and being able to use Samus’ gunship for more than saving was really awesome.
0
Metroid Prime 2: Echoes
The follow up to Metroid Prime, this game wasn’t as good as the first, but told a great story. Swapping between the Light world and Dark world was a fun mechanic. I loved the look of the new suits in this game and remember the game being visually excellent.
0
Star Wars: Rogue Squadron
You can fly an X-wing down the Death Star trench, do you really need more reason to play this game? You do? Well there are a lot of other missions that are fun and challenging to play, not to mention getting a gold medal in all of them. There is more than just an X-Wing to fly too. A really great Star Wars game that made you really feel like you were in that pilot seat
0
Star Wars Rogue Squadron III: Rebel Strike
The third in the Rogue Squadron series. Another excellent game, but not quite as good as the second one in my opinion. They added on-foot missions in this one, which is not what I play a Rogue Squadron game for. Being on foot just didn't control as well as flying did and I found myself trying to rush through them just to get back in the cockpit. A good entry into the series, but definitely not the best.
0
Vampire Survivors
I really enjoyed this game, and then I deleted it for some reason I don't remember, and now I've downloaded it again and am starting from scratch. The one thing I learned from that was that i shouldn't have deleted it. The Other thing that I learned, its still a great game, even when you've tasted all the cool things you can do as you unlock stuff and then have to do without for a while. It's a lot of fun, a good pick up and play for a bit and then go back to other things game.
0
Mario Golf: Super Rush
While I haven't played this game in a while, it is a lot of fun. I picked it up to play with the TDG guys and had a blast. Fun mechanics, fun courses, fun power ups. A really solid entry into the Mario sports category of games. It's an easy game to pick up and be able to play, but there's a lot there to practice and get good with. Pick it up and play with the cr3w because Sundays are for Golf.
0
Pokémon Emerald
The third installment in my favorite generation. Loved being able to chase after and capture Rayquaza. This was an excellent excuse to re-explore my favorite region and try new things. And it added Flame Body speeding up hatching, which might be the best upgrade to Pokemon games ever.
0
Pokémon Platinum
This is the Pokemon game I probably put the most amount of time and replays into. Diamond and Pearl were excellent games, and Platinum was even better. Loved being able to get Girantina in game. Great Pokemon game, and the definite choice to pick if you’re going back to this gen to play for the first time.
0
Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver
If nothing else, the ability to have your Pokemon follow you around is enough to get this game 5 stars. A return to Johto and Kanto was so much fun, and it looked beautiful on the DS. Everything that made Gold and Silver great, plus all the new things added to the series made this such and excellent game.
0
The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword
Skyward sword seemed to be underrated by the mainstream to me. I don’t recall what all the complaints were, but I thought this game was excellent. I’m a huge fan of world building in books, movies, and games. And this game felt like an essential piece in the Legend that is the LoZ games. The story was one that gave me goosebumps, which isn’t unheard of in Zelda games for me, but it’s not every game that does it. Give it a try, you probably won’t regret it.
0
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
I’ve mentioned before that I’m not a retro gamer. I don’t go back and replay much. Games I missed on old systems I generally can’t get into, no matter how badly I might want to. This game, however, I had no issues getting sucked into. Truly a masterpiece. Well crafted, beautiful music, wonderful story, fun gameplay. It’s such a good game, definitely a contender for best game in the Zelda franchise. Go play it if you haven’t.

GoldenEye
My first experience with a console FPS. This game was one of those games where all your friends said they were great at it and won all the time until you finally all got together to play and found out that all of you were outmatched by the one friend who didn’t trash talk at all. The single player game was a lot of fun and was replayable by ramping up the difficulty to get new tasks and tougher enemies. But multiplayer was where it shined. Lots of cheat codes to put in to make matches fun, and of course the no map option to really flex how good you were at the game (I was not that good bee tee dubz).
0
Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel
While not Borderlands 2 level of great, the Pre-Sequel was amazing. Set before Borderlands 2, but released after it, it give more story to Handsome Jack and some of the other characters you met in Borderlands 2 (and also the original). It had some great DLC characters, but really it’s playing as CL4P-TP that is the correct character choice. Set on a moon of Pandora, you get to experience zero G, Ice weapons, and a whole new cast of supporting characters. Love this game.
0
Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout
This is one of those pick up and play whenever games. It’s a lot of fun, you can play for hours or minutes and it works either way. Even losing doesn’t feel bad because you can pop right back into a new round quickly. And it’s an excellent party night game, as everyone who has been around on Wed night knows.
0
Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga
I’ve been playing the Lego Star War games since the original. And to see it all come together in this one game was so exciting. It came out when my daughter was getting into Star Wars, so we got to play it together and that really made the purchase worth it. The gameplay was fun, just like the other Lego games. And it had tons to find for all those completionist people out there. Great game, definitely a must buy for Star Wars and Lego fans.
0
Geometry Dash
This game is terrible and I cannot stop playing it. Please someone help me. This isn’t right. I’m not the person who refuses to fail at games and has to keep going to win. I don’t know why I keep trying. Oh, wait, it’s because of the music. The music is pretty good. Everything else is terrible. Don’t play this game.
0
Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen
The first of the remakes. It did a great job, and adding the Sevii islands was great. Seeing the original games in new, updated graphics was so great. And while some complain it’s just a money grab re-releasing games, it also opens up the originals to a whole new generation. Loved this game, and of course I picked Charmander as my starter
0
Pokémon GO
The game that made people go outside. A neat little Pokemon game that makes you go places. I played it for a while, and then fell away, mostly due to data usage. The support with Pokemon home to send those shiny Pokemon to the main games was a welcome addition. Good game, but not enough to keep my attention on it for long.
0
Pokémon Legends Arceus
A fun change of course from the main Pokemon series. I have not finished it yet, due to shiny things distracting me, but I really enjoyed it. The storyline was interesting, and the changes in poke battles and catching Pokemon was a lot of fun. I really want to get back to this game and finish it up. Probably the best Pokemon spinoff game.
0
Pokémon Scarlet and Violet
Everyone wanted an open world Pokemon game. I don’t think it worked well. Regardless of being able to go wherever, there was still and order you should do the gyms in. But I found no real direction on which to go to next. I’m fine using the internet to find out if I’m missing a cool rare pokemon from a route, but I don’t want to keep checking to see if I’m heading in the right direction instead of aimlessly wandering wondering if the next area will destroy my Pokemon or being way underleveled for my team. That being said it was an enjoyable game, but suffered from the open world ness everyone wanted without thinking about the implications.
0
Pokémon Sword and Shield
There was a bunch of stuff in this one that I wasn’t sure about, but I think it was done really well. The wild areas was a nice step into open world Pokemon. And this generation had the best “Bad Guy” team. Just a bunch of soccer hooligans who were really into their favorite competitor. No plans of world domination, no plans of releasing all Pokemon, just huge sports fans. A+ team design.
0
Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon
A great follow up to Sun and Moon (I had Ultra Moon). It gave me a great reason to continue in Alola in a generation that I really enjoyed. The ultra Beasts were a fun addition, and to top it all off, I caught a shiny Snorunt in this game, and it (now a Glalie) follows me to every new game.
1
Pokémon Sun and Moon
I loved sun and Moon (I had Moon). I wasn’t sure about to when I heard about trials instead of gyms, but it was a lot of fun. And I loved that it was easy to imagine you were the jerk rival beating up the friendly protagonist. But it was just as nice for it to be a friendly rivalry instead of the normal relationship you have with the rival. The Pokemon designs were great, and the regional variants were really cool (used a Grimer/Muk through the whole game).
0
Pokémon Black 2 and White 2
Like Black and White, I just couldn’t get into this game. And I didn’t do research ahead of time, so I picked up the wrong copy. I figured whichever one I had first, I should get the opposite color for 2, and apparently that was wrong. Wouldn’t mind a remake to give it another shot since I’ve seen people say that this is one of their fav generations.
0
Pokémon Black and White
I had a hard time getting into this generation. The new Pokemon didn’t stand out to me very well to me. There were some standouts, Like Volcarona, but overall I was underwhelmed by the Gen V Pokemon. I’d love to see a remake of this one though to give it another shot.
0
Pokémon Gold and Silver
I really enjoyed Gold and Silver (I had Silver). I know a lot of people say it was the best, and there are good arguments for that. And at the time, it was amazing. Breeding Pokemon, day and night? Amazing. I do think some improvements in later gens were more franchise changing than this gen. But it was a great game. I remember being very disappointed that breeding didn’t work the way I thought it would. I thought if I bred a weedle and caterpie I’d get a butterfly bee hybrid monstrosity. I’m still disappointed that’s not how it works. At least there’s a website to make those cursed combinations now.
0
Animal Crossing
The original. I had a grumpy goat named Gruff on my island and he was the best. Obviously the series has come very far from this one, but the one thing anew shot is one doesn’t have that this one did is Mr. Resetti, who would yell at you if you reset or exited the game without saving. And rumor was if you did it too much, he’d make you write an apology letter.
0
Pikmin 4
This game was a surprise hit for me. I’ve always liked the Pikmin games, so I knew I was going to get this. It went above and beyond expectations. The amount of content alone makes it worth the price. But the gameplay was solid, the story was fun, the new Pikmin types were well designed. Great game, if you’re a fan of the series, go get it. If you’ve never played this series, go get it. Dandori is life.

Super Smash Bros. for Wii U (Smash 4)
Smash 4 was the dark ages of Smash for me. I had been losing interest in the game with Brawl, and this game did not bring me back in. I temporarily gave up on my main since 64, Pikachu, trying to get myself excited again. But I just couldn’t get into it. And while single player isn’t the main draw of Smash, I’ve always enjoyed it. And it gave me something to do when I didn’t have anyone else to play with. And this single player was not great. I mentioned in my review for the 3DS version that the final boss felt less about being good with your character and more about memorizing patterns. And then there was the maze. In theory it seemed pretty cool to me, but I think it was implemented poorly. Maybe I just needed to Git Gud, but Smash 4 was not a good generation in my opinion.

Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS (Smash 4)
I don’t want to badmouth a Smash Bros game, but I’m going to. I didn’t enjoy this game. Smash was not intended to be played on a system as small as the 3DS. I was always worried I’d break my control stick playing. The game felt off playing it, like something was missing. The single player final boss felt impossible. All the other classic modes you got to master Hand and they had ways to change it up and make it difficult, but high difficulty in this one felt more like memorizing then bosses movement than being good with a character. I also wasn’t a fan of there being two versions, one for the 3DS and one for the WiiU. And they released the worse version first. If you want to play the era of Smash, do it on the WiiU.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl
Brawl was a really good game. More characters, more changes, some good, others bad (I’m looking at you random slipping to prevent wavedashing…). The thing that really shines in Brawl is Subspace Emissary. This single player (or co-op) mode was the best adventure mode in any smash game. It was a lot of fun and set the stage for World of Light in Ultimate, though I still feel like Emissary is better than WoL. Go back and play this game for Emissary if nothing else.
0
Super Smash Bros. Melee
Some people say Melee is the best Smash. I disagree, but it’s a close second. It took what smash 64 did and really polished it up. The bigger roster, charged smash attacks, air dodges, and other changes it had made the game so much better. An excellent game in the smash series, but just go play Ultimate instead.

Super Mario Bros. Wonder
Mario Wonder is popular in this house. After the Bluey review the girls insisted that I review Mario Wonder next. This is a really enjoyable game. Mario games are not my go games. I like them, but generally opt for others over it. However the girls absolutely love this game and what follows is Lainie’s 5 star review:
The reason I like Mario Wonder is that it’s not too hard, it’s not too easy. When you die they always give you another try. And the other people online help you come back. It’s a really great game!

And this is Elise’s: I just love this game because this game lets me play all the princesses and I also love Daddy helping me. The end!
0
Bluey: The Videogame
Farming this review out to the daughters since they have played it more than I have. Elise gives it 5 stars, Lainie says 4. And since we don’t have a 4.5 option I give it the benefit of the doubt and it gets 5. Lainie loves the game and has lots of fun with it, but find the glitches that pop up to be very frustrating and that’s what gets the 4 star rating from her.
What is your favorite part of the Bluey game?
Elise: Everything!
Lainie: I like how they give you a story to do, and then once you complete that you can go wild still having things to do. And what I mean by go wild is that they give you things to do and you can take your time to go do it.

Golf with Your Friends
This game is a lot of fun and more than occasionally infuriating. My D&D group started playing this while on breaks from the campaign and have a lot of fun. For added friendly completion turn on ball collision and listen to your friends rage when you mess up their perfect shot. It’s a great game to chill with friends with, definitely recommend. We should get a C3 game night going with it…

Back 4 Blood
The spiritual successor to the Left 4 Dead series, it feels very much like it. But it isn’t quite the same. There is a card perk system that lets you customize your character, which is neat, but a little deeper than I want to get into for a zombie shooter. I haven’t played as much as I’d like so far, but none of the characters have been a breakout favorite for me like Francis or Ellis were. It’s a good time with friends though, and if you’re looking to fill the hole in your life that left 4 dead filled, this will do the job.

Disney Emoji Blitz
I have played a lot of this. Is it anything special, not really. But it’s a good time waster like many other mobile games. They’ve recently added more stuff to get you to spend your gems on, and overall made it more confusing to just play. But it’s not bad. And I’ve got the Grogu emoji, so that’s a big plus.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom
This game is more of BOTW, which sounds great on paper, but its also more of the things I didn't like about BOTW. More weapon breaks, more sidequests taking you away from the main story, much much more area to aimlessly wander. This is one of the few Zelda games that I put down and didn't pick back up. I want to, if only to finish the story. Maybe when I do finally complete it I'll give it the 4th star if the ending sells me on it. I want to like this game more than I do. And there are great things to it. The powers and being able to build things is a lot of fun. But overall, not the best Zelda game in my opinion. Not even the best Switch Zelda game.

Conker's Bad Fur Day
A mature game on the N64, this game was a surprise for a lot of people. I got it as soon as it released and enjoyed the whole thing. It was loaded with pop culture references like a Matrix level. And there's a fight with a giant pile of...poo. The game was really funny, and found ways to shock you even after you learned to expect anything. And it has Greg the Grim Reaper, who is one of my favorite video game characters. (Video is clip from game, so its rated M by Bombchu)

Neverwinter Nights
Neverwinter Nights was such an excellent game. I played it shortly after I played Baldur's gate 1 and 2, and it was such an improvement. It updated the rules from 2nd edition to 3rd edition, which i found to be much more user friendly. The story was excellent, the graphics looked amazing, and most importantly, I didn't suffer a harddrive crash and was able to actually finish it. This game is the game that really got me into D&D. I played solo, but also played co-op with a friend of mine. We decided that one day, we would play D&D, and then spent the next 20ish years playing DM chicken (I lost). If you like TTRPGs, turn based RPGs, games with good stories, or looking for something after playing Baldur's Gate 3, then this game is for you. There is a remastered version out there (which I haven't played) so its accessible and often on sale. Go play.

Mario Kart: Double Dash
Double Dash is the best Mario Kart. Two characters per kart was an amazing idea. And character specific items was icing on the cake. Being able to race co-op was so great too, especially since my best friend hated driving and preferred shooting items. It would be a great feature to have come back now to play with my kids. And lets not forget the best battle course ever, the Gamecube.

Tiny Tina's Wonderlands
I enjoy this game, but it is my least favorite in the Borderlands series. The addition of subclasses is a fun idea, but I feel like it could have been implemented better. There are also additional equipment slots for rings and such, which is also a fitting addition for a TTRPG inspired game, but the Borderlands Billion guns aspect makes trying to find the right equipment for you feel like an absolute chore. I found it very overwhelming to sort through and keep track of the loot and equipment. But like the other games in the series, its a lot of fun to play, the dialogue is funny, and the story is entertaining. While not my favorite Borderlands game, its definitely one to play if you like the other games in the series

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
I feel like when it comes to picking the best Zelda game, its all about splitting hairs. And BOTW had so much going for it. It has a great story, a huge Hyrule, one that feels big enough to be considered a kingdom. Combat is enjoyable and difficult at time. But the weapon breaking system drove me nuts. And while its not as aimless ad TOTK feels, the lack of urgency to save Hyrule is a negative for me. I've been replaying Ocarina lately, and without trying overly hard I have almost all the hearts, and got Biggeron's sword without feeling like I stepped away from the main quest that long. BOTW and hunting down the shrines and Korok seeds just feels like too much busy work that takes you away from the main story. All that being said, this is an excellent game and a must play in the Zelda series.

Tales from the Borderlands
A really fun game in the Borderlands world. And even though it isn’t blowing away baddies with billions of guns, it still feel like a Borderlands game. The story was well told, the gameplay was enjoyable. All around good game. Definitely give it a try if you’re a fan of the Borderlands universe.

Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem
I talked about this on my What are your Three episode. Excellent game. No idea how I played it through three times. But since I generally hate games like this, that should be proof enough that this game is great. The sanity element in the game was well implemented and really made the gameplay interesting. I enjoyed the story, which spanned centuries, it was really well done. Watching everything come together as you went from character to character was really great. I wish there was a remake or sequel to this game, it really was one of the best I’ve played. And it was on GameCube!

Borderlands
The first in the series. It sets the tone for all the others to follow. The opening credits/scene sets the tone for what kind of world you’re playing in. The enemies are over the top, as are the allies. Combat is fast paced and fun. To say weapon choices are plentiful would be an understatement. The game is most enjoyable with a friend or two to help with fight for your life, plus when the skills get combined, it makes things a lot more fun. The player characters aren’t as fleshed out as they are in the sequels, but they all feel very unique.
0
Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn
I loved the very little of this game I actually played. You could import your character from the first Baldur’s Gate into to and continue your characters story. Returning companions kept the game feeling like a sequel and not just a new game that used the same name as the first. And it was difficult. The writing was top notch, lots of good moments between characters. If it weren’t for my hard drive failures in BG1 preventing me from importing my character, I think I would have gone much further in this game.

Team Fortress 2
A fun Hat collection simulator with guns and the best FPS characters ever created. The Meet the videos are classics. Go watch them all. Then go play some TF2 and cry some more!

Mortal Kombat
Played this on Sega, so I got to see blood and have ABACABB chiseled into my brain for all eternity. The first fatality I was able to perform was Scorpion, and that felt like the biggest accomplishment that I'd ever do in a video game. And, honestly, young me was probably right.

Left 4 Dead 2
I ever tell you about the time when me and my buddy Keith played Left 4 Dead 2? He thought throwing a molotov at a tank was a good idea, but it backfired and he got burns over 90% of his body.
0
Left 4 Dead
One of the few horror/survival games I enjoy playing. Challenging, fun, and creepy, its best played with friends. Nothing lightens the mood of leaving your friend for dead than hearing them yell at you and call you names over voice chat. And if I ever play with you and you pick Francis before I do? I will accidentally shoot you on purpose all game.
0
Doom II
It's got the super shotgun, what else do you need?

I know I said I'd play this on stream, and haven't yet (i know, you are all very upset about that, I'm sorry), but I have been doing "research" for the stream and this game gets tough real fast. Challenging and fun, the gameplay is still great, it doesn't feel like an old game. The action still feels fast paced and in your face. If you can only pick one classic Doom to play, play this one. But really play both Doom and Doom II.

New Pokémon Snap
I enjoyed playing this, learning the tricks to get the better shots made it more of a challenge than just point and shoot. But still and easy game for young pokmeon fans to pick up and play. Fun game, plus you get to look at cute pokemon.

Wii Sports
Bowling, tennis, uh, javelin? I forget what the other things were off the top of my head. Mainly because bowling and tennis were too much fun.

Sonic the Hedgehog
Sonic was a lot of fun, I have a lot of great memories of playing with my older sister and her deciding she didn’t want to play after green hill zone every time. Good music! Fun levels! Terrifying drowning sequences! It’s got it all!

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
This game changed so much so the series and to gaming overall. One of (but not the) best Zelda games. I remember staying up waaaaaaay too late playing this game.

Excellent story, great gameplay. Both hold up still today, which I have discovered replaying it lately. If you haven’t played it, go play it.

Fortnite
I like this game more than I thought I would. I am not that good at this game, however. But it still manages to be fun! It’s not TF2, but it fills a shooter game craving when need be.

Shadows Over Loathing
An excellent follow up to West of Loathing, which is an excellent follow up to Kingdom of Loathing! The humor is right up my alley, its a lot of fun, and the puzzles can be pretty tricky sometimes.

Borderlands 2
Took everything that was great about the first Borderlands and improved it. More guns, more funs. The classes were all fun to play, new baddies to fight. The story was excellent. Introduced one of the best video game villains. Go play this game if you haven’t. Get some friends to play with you. Hell, maybe I’ll even be one of those friends if you want!

Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire
Ruby and Sapphire are my favorite generation. Introduced some of my favorite Pokémon, that are still favorites today. The weather stuff was a great addition and I always liked how castform took advantage of it. Good story, fun locations. Defintely my favorite in the series. And the remakes were great too.

Baldur's Gate
Great game. Played to just before the final boss twice. Loved the story, really wish I had finished it, but both times, right as I was approaching the final boss, my harddrive crashed and I lost everything. So great game, but loses a star due to its tendency to destroy my harddrives.
As for revisiting the game today (even with the enhanced editions), its rough to play. And it runs on old d&d rules, so if you got used to how things worked in BG3, or Table Top D&D, it won't help you in this game. And the game can be brutally tough sometimes. I had my first random encounter when I tried replaying recently, it was 8 bandits. I was level 1 still, have one other party member, and got absolutely destroyed. Brutal. But if you can get past that, great dialogue and story!

Tetris 99
I’m going to start by saying I hate Tetris. Always have. This gets a two star from me because the concept of the 99 players is really great and I think they did a great job with it. The few rounds I played were a lot more interesting than I expected. And guys like Dan seem to really like it. So it gets a second star, but at the end of the day, it’s Tetris, and Tetris is terrible.

Metroid Prime
This was my first experience with Metroid. I absolutely loved this game from beginning to end. Game play was fun, levels were beautiful to look at, music was excellent. Just an excellent experience all around. It got me to go back and play (most) of the older games and really enjoy the series as a whole. Now we just need the whole trilogy Re-released along with Prime 4…

Mario Super Sluggers
Best Baseball Game Ever Made. Loved playing this, it was a lot of fun. Like all the Mario Sports games, the specials of the different characters made it chaotic and enjoyable.

Star Wars Rogue Squadron II: Rogue Leader
This game was amazing. I remember the first time I put it on being blown away by how beautiful it looked. Gameplay was excellent. It took everything the first one did right and made it even better. I would go back and play the mission attacking the second Death Star over and over because you could just fly around shooting down enemies until you decided to continue the story. Just endless tie fighter destruction for as long as you wanted.
1
Doom
A lot of real good memories made with this game. Doom II was better, but this set the stage. In my opinion, on par with modern shooter in terms of fun. The lack of being able to jump and climb and all that modern stuff makes it more stressful, those demons are in your face and you have to deal with them. No where to run.

Baldur's Gate III
I think this game is fantastic. The story is entertaining, the gameplay is well executed, and its pretty to look at. It does a great job of translating the D&D 5E ruleset to a video game, making changes that make sense for it not being a table top RPG. The decisions that you make throughout the game actually matter. There were a few times were I took a break from the game to legitimately think about the decision I was about to make, one of which came back to bite me in the ass. And that was amazing to me. I figured there'd be some repercussions from that decision, but was pleasantly surprised at how much it really screwed with me later. I recently read about a cat that you can get adopted in Act 3, but only if you made a specific choice back in Act 1. You can play the knight in shining armor, or go the main villain route. Nothing breaks the story. While I don't personally like every single companion (looking at you Wyll), they are all well thought out and can serve as an important part of your party. While there were some references to the original two games, they are not required to have played to enjoy this game. It's a standalone story that doesn't need the originals to be enjoyable. I would definitely recommend this game to anyone who likes fantasy RPGs. Now I'm off to officially start my second playthrough...

Pokémon Diamond and Pearl
Really enjoyed this generation. When it came out it got one of my friends back into the series, so we’d play together while hanging out. Up until this gen, I never picked up the third edition, but I got Platinum and played the hell out of it. While not my absolute favorite gen (which would be gen 3), I probably put the most hours into this one. Great game. Definitely recommend.

Disney Illusion Island
This is a Metroidvania built with kids in mind, and that's a good thing. You can pick you level of difficulty by picking ho many hearts you have, 3,2,1, or invincible. For me, the invincible option will be great when my youngest inevitably wants to play. She'll be able to participate without constantly waiting to be brought back, which as a Dad trying to play games that won't turn the kids off from them is excellent. In multiplayer you can also hug each other to gain a bonus heart, which is nice for keeping everyone in the game longer. Respawns are accomplished at mailboxes, which are plentiful, so sitting out watching is never for too long.

As a Metroidvania, platforming is a big part of the game. Nothing I've come across is super challenging for someone who has played plenty of similar games, but learning the jump timing can be frustrating for a new player. This game lets one player do a rope drop, so that the other players can climb up to places they weren't able to reach. For my daughter, I told her that she had to try a few times to make the jump before giving her the rope, and as we played, I had to drop the rope less and less. So it's really a nice tool to help teach someone the skills for the game.

Gameplay wise, it's so far a pretty good Metroidvania. We've come across secret areas, and some areas that we will have to come back to when we get a new powerup. The hardest part was explaining to my daughter that it didn't matter how badly she wanted what was on the other side of the wall, she was just going to have to wait. Platforming is challenging enough to not feel like I'm playing a preschooler game like Paw Patrol, but on the easy side (so far at least) so it's not an impossible task for young/new players to accomplish. The dialogue as had me laugh a bunch of times already.

My only complaint so far about it is that there isn't a way to remove the enemies that are wandering, you just avoid them. Now I don't know if that will change down the line, but right now it can be frustrating for my daughter when she's trying to avoid an enemy and retry a jump without losing hearts. It would be nice to be able to remove the enemy with her to give her a clearer shot at the jump.

We haven't reached a boss yet, so I will update when I get some experience with that.

The Disney brand is big selling point in my house, but I don't think that it's an aspect that would be off putting.

Overall, as a Dad with younger kids, I can't recommend this game enough.

The Kingdom of Loathing
A fun little browser-based RPG that really isn't little at all. Pick one of 6 Classes (Seal Clubber, Turtle Tamer, Pastamancer, Sauceror, Accordian Thief, and Disco bandit) to defeat the Naught Sorceress to rescue the King! The game is meant to be played over and over. After you rescue the King, you can Ascend, which allows you to start again new. Each time you ascend you can choose a new class, make some of your skills permanent so you begin with them off the bat. There are numerous familiars to collect, lots of end game content (though much of it you need many ascensions to be able to effectively do). You can also donate to them to get Items of the Month, which sometimes unlock even more locations to adventure in.

You get 40 adventures a day to use, but can get more by eating food and drinking booze (drink too much and you become too drunk to adventure, so be careful). As you progress you can get items to give you more adventures per day. The community has always been pretty great. There are clans you can join (I'm in Hyrule, but currently listed as inactive because, well, I was inactive) which you can use to get some items out of the stash to help with your current run.

It really is a fun game, lots to do and find out.

My only complaint is that there is a lot of stuff in the game, it can be overwhelming, even for someone who has been playing for a while. But the wiki helps out a lot. https://kol.coldfront.net/thekolwiki/index.php/Main_Page

Give it a try! Maybe you'll find a new time filler!

Pokémon X and Y
Had a classic pokemon feel, added Mega Evolutions, and was just an enjoyable game. 4/5 would play again.

Pokémon Red and Blue
The game that started, well, a lot of things. While not the best entry in the franchise, it was the first and set the groundwork for others in the series to build upon.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
If you love Star Wars, you need to play this game. If you like RPGs, you need to play this game. If you love amazing games that deserve all the credit that they get, you need to play this game. If you don’t know who HK-47 is, you need to play this game (and I feel sorry for you).

Marvel's Spider-Man (2018)
Only recently got to play this game. Absolutely one of the best games I’ve ever played. It’s been a long time since I’ve had a game that I start playing and all of a sudden it’s hours later and I didn’t notice. Great for feeling like you really are spiderman. Terrible for not being tired at work the next day.
