A gritty, one-shot, one-kill battle royale shooter set in the Bayou of Louisiana in the cowboy-gun days. Every hunt is a game of stealth and sudden shootouts as you crawl through the mud and waking dead to set up an essential ambush with your squad, you may not have been the first ones in the bosses' lair, but you'll sure as hell be the last ones out.
From the creator of The Stanley Parable, this is Davey Wreden's best work yet. Perhaps it's the bias of a game developer, but the journey through aspiring game dev Coda's work, as narrated by Davey, is an emotional and inspiring masterpiece that keeps you guessing and reflecting as you journey through their games one-by-one. A must play for any 'artist' out there and highly recommended otherwise.
THE modern roguelike and breaker of many upsetting trends. RoR2 opts for making its players feel like a god with compounding items and a time-based difficulty and enemy count increase, but it never neglects the core build that makes each character special. Similarly, the game throws out randomized rooms in favor of pre-built, well-designed 3D maps where instead item placements and key structures are randomized. Altogether, a fantastic game.
An Xbox Arcade classic that still holds up to this day. While the ancient attempt to capitalize on Minecraft's success can be a little off-putting for new players, the FPS gameplay and simple graphical style within is reminiscent of boomer shooters and classic Halo in a way that still feels fresh and accessible.
The grandfather of the modern roguelike shows its age. Room-based and item-dependent roguelikes have become increasingly stale as Isaac and similar titles offer little unique gameplay beyond that point. Characters feel meaningless as every run turns into a "what items did I get" fest and gameplay largely remains unchanged at its core beyond that premise. This is my controversial take and my hill to die on.
Thank You Dinosaur Game, for always being there when my connection isn't. I've since moved on to Opera GX as my browser, but in my heart you will stay. 5 Stars out of love.
Hollownest offers the soul of a souls game and the quirk of your favorite indie darling. Clicky-quick action and solemn long walks across the world offer contrast, beauty, and fun around every corner of this Metroidvania's buggy world where other such games fail to bring content of such quality.
The puzzler to beat all puzzlers. With abundant humor and contrastingly chilling atmosphere, no other game quite fills you with the need to finish a test, so try thinking with portals.
The mama of physics FPS still holds up to this day. From tight corridor shooting to rooftop-jumping, buzzsaw-flinging action, there's no moment spent where you'd rather be anyone but the Freeman.
The twist rhythm gaming needed was one of the hips apparently. Beat Saber offers a physicality unmatched by many of its gaming peers (we won't talk about Just Dance here) and the result is the most intuitive and flowy experience virtual reality and music games can offer. The only issue is its reliance on mods for replayability and the challenges that popular headsets like the Oculus/Meta Quest bring to that field.
The sleeper hit of the franchise, Jackbox 2 comes packing heat with fun long campaign games such as Bomb Corp while still offering the classic oneshot modes the series is known for with Quiplash, Bidiots, and Earwax
While a solid hero shooter, it tends to get bogged down in an attempt to be the next esports craze (which, to be fair, it did become for some time). With more attention paid towards casual audiences without losing its competitive flair, this game could have made a solid foundation for Overwatch 2 to further butcher.
