Outburst is a game of topics that is played in seven rounds. You can play by yourself or in teams. The basic ideas is for you and/or your team to guess as many of the predetermined Target Answers as possible. You receive points for each correct answer you give. The winner is the team with the most points at the end of the game.

The first two rounds consistent of guessing the predetermined Target Answers (known as Regular Outburst). Third round is Reverse Burst in which the Target Answers are revealed, but you have to guess the topic. Fourth round plays like the first two rounds. The fifth round will be either Sloppy Seconds or Challenge Clock. In Sloppy Seconds, the first team to play (the losing team) will have 30 seconds to guess as many Target Answers. Afterwards, the second team will have a chance to guess the remaining Target Answers in 30 seconds. Challenge Clock begins with the losing team in which they must guess 5 out of the 10 Target Answers in 60 seconds. The second team does the same for a different topic. The team who answers the most of the 5, or the fastest of all 5, wins that round. Round six is Shout Burst in which teams receive 10 multiple choice questions about a particular topic. The seventh and final round is Mondo Burst where players are given a topic with a vast amount of Topic Answers in which they must think of as many as they can in 60 seconds.
