Analogue Pocket
I’ll make a super post review this week but wanted to get this out there as a reminder - tomorrow at 8am PST their shop is restocking the black and white models. Amazing handheld system that plays all GB/GBC/GBA out of the box. Offers fpga emulation; I’m playing Chrono Trigger and Super Mario Kart on it now. Extremely nice looking screen, that’s the main selling point. The main cons are - emulation currently doesn’t allow save states, and the cartridges can knock loose more easily than I’d like.

Game Boy Advance SP
Definitely an improvement over the GBA from a display perspective. It was more portable too. I really enjoyed the game library as well.

Mobile (iOS, Android)
The convenience is the best part, and it does have a solid library of games. But the controls only really work for a subset of them, and really hinder everything else. This thing has Chrono Freaking Trigger....but, the controls suck for it. Maybe if I invested in a proper mobile controller it'd be better, but at that point I may as well reach for my Switch. I'll touch on my fav games as I like to do - Pokemon Go, Mario Kart Tour, Dune!, Angry Birds series, What the Golf.

PlayStation
I knew I had to own this because Final Fantasy 3/6 was my favorite game, and my hype around FF7 was unreal. Squaresoft had migrated away from Nintendo to Sony, and I had to follow suit. Still, I was a kid and this was expensive. My brothers and I saved our money and managed to get it 10% off when a new Best Buy opened nearby. We were not disappointed! Started with Crash Bandicoot and Mega Man 8. And then the flood of RPGs came in - FF7, FF Tactics, Suikoden, Breath of Fire 3, FF8 and much more. During that time, my N64 was mainly used for multiplayer, but the best single player experiences were on Playstation. I only took away one star because I don't think a lot of the games have aged as well as SNES and PS2, nor was this on the same tier as the Switch.

Sega Game Gear
My main memories are it was a battery hog, and it had a fun sonic game on it. My brother had one, and I think he accidentally broke it after a few months. The graphics were pretty incredible at the time. I didn’t get to experience any game outside sonic but it seemed the battery consumption made it harder to get into.

GameCube
I had a great time with this system, absolutely loved Wind Waker, Mario Kart Double Dash, Luigi’s Mansion, Mario Sunshine and more. The controllers are among the best for Nintendo consoles. As others mentioned the splash logo at the beginning of every game was flawless - I don’t know why, but this makes a system better haha

Sega Genesis
Literally every game I owned on this was Sonic mainline or spin-off. They were fun but it couldn’t peel me away from NES and SNES for the most part.

Game Boy Color
I didn’t get many color games, I just didn’t play much handheld this iteration (was in high school). It’s a great system but didn’t change the game as much as other handhelds in my opinion.

Game Boy Advance
Metroid fusion and Metroid Zero Mission rekindled my love of 2D Metroids. Besides those I loved Final Fantasy Tactics, and Minish Cap was a fun quirky Zelda game. This felt a good leap above the GBC.

Nintendo DS
Incredible system at the time. Not only did it have a ton of great RPGs but had games that made solid use of the touch screen. The professor Layton series hooked me with its addictive puzzles and surprisingly interesting stories. I really enjoyed the two Zelda entries too.

Game Boy
Looking back, this is far from a perfect system but for starting Nintendo's handheld consoles and giving the world Pokemon, I give it 5 stars. It had many other classic games as well. I remember struggling to play on long car rides without the light attachment - good times.

Dreamcast
This system was ahead of its time in a few ways, like the portable VMUs that plug into the controllers and the built-in modem. I enjoyed Sonic Adventure, Crazy Taxi, Tony Hawk 2, Chu Chu Rocket, Skies of Arcadia and a handful of other games on this. Once the PS2 came around, I put this down like most people. Maybe things would have been different if the competition hadn't been so stiff.

Nintendo 64
I don't think the games for this aged as well as the SNES since they broke so much ground for 3D games, but I had a blast with this. My love of Mario Kart began with MK64, and I still consider Ocarina of Time a top 5 game. I have 2 brothers, and before the N64 we rarely got to play games all together. N64 fixed that - we stayed up late competing at Mario Kart, Goldeneye, Mario Party, Smash, and probably a dozen more multiplayer classics. The N64 got a second life in college for me. The Gamecube was already out at the time, but the N64 library was better. N64 in a dorm room is perfection - by the end of freshman year, I swear everyone in my dorm swung by regularly to play smash with us.

Nintendo (NES)
My first console - I didn't even know what Nintendo was when my brother asked for it for Christmas. It was extremely important in my life and for the video game industry, but I just can't rate it 5 stars since the SNES was so much better. It fixed the issues reading the cartridges, had better controllers and much better games. I still have many fond memories playing the NES though, I enjoyed it for many years.

Super Nintendo (SNES)
The golden age of gaming in my opinion. So many classics that aged extremely well - I still play Super Mario World, Super Metroid and Zelda: aLttP every couple years or so. Final Fantasy 6 > all other Final Fantasies. My brothers and I asked for this for Christmas, and on Christmas Eve our cat scratched one of the few gifts that was under the tree early. I could see enough inside to know it was F-Zero - and sure enough, there was a console-sized gift wrapped on Christmas morning.

PC
I've been gaming on PC for a long time, playing the Kings Quest series, Scorched Earth and Doom in the early 90's, then Warcraft, Starcraft, Command and Conquer, Heroes of Might and Magic series. For the last 20 years or so I've only gamed on the PC and the Nintendo systems since a lot of the great Playstation/Xbox games make it to PC as well. 2 years ago I built my first custom PC which was a great experience in itself (I love upgrading parts of it like fans every now and then). It's hard to justify buying $60 console games when I can buy 6-10 AAA Steam games for the same price on PC.

Wii
I remember the absolute mania around the Wii the first couple years it was out. I subscribed to daily Gamestop emails before it came out, and one morning I saw they had opened preorders for it but only in person at their stores. I was late to work and I didn't shower that day, but I did score the last preorder at my local Gamestop! Worth it. The second day I had it I played Zelda: Twilight Princess for about 8 hours. And Wii Sports was a blast too. I really enjoyed motion controls for most of the life of the console, and there were a lot of great games along the way.

Nintendo 3DS
This has a lot of great exclusives on it. Some of my favs include Zelda: Link Between Worlds, Fire Emblem Awakening, Mario Kart 7, Fantasy Life, Pokemon X/Y, and Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward (ok, that one may be on other systems now too). I didn't care for the 3D effect most of the time, but it was used well in certain games (Zelda and Mario 3D Land in particular). My kids and I still play this from time to time.

Wii U
This was more of a prototype for the Switch, but doesn't deserve all the hates it gets. I think its bad image is mostly due to terrible marketing. Dare I say it may have had more incredible, original first party games than the Switch! Which is why they ported so many of the Wii U games over. The dual-screen itself wasn't the best gimmick but it did shine in certain games, like Wind Waker HD - playing the game on the TV while managing your inventory on the tablet was great. Still, I have mine set up next to the Switch and I always gravitate to the Switch over this.

PlayStation 2
Honestly this was the last non-Nintendo console I owned (I PC game too). As a huge RPG fan this was the system to own - you couldn't get mainline Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, and other great series anywhere else. But I loved everything from Metal Gear Solid 2 to Tony Hawk to Shadow of the Colossus. The capability to play DVD's was icing on the cake. Somewhere at my parents house I have that 8MB "beast" of a memory card with so many cherished hours of gameplay saved.

Nintendo Switch
The Switch may be my favorite console ever. Works great in handheld mode (which is how I play 90% of the time) and I love that it frees up the TV for someone else. So many incredible games - Nintendo’s long lineage of first party games are superb this generation. My only complaint are the joycons since I’ve had two pairs that needed drift repair.
