I came here to chew bubble gum and play video games, and I got some bubblegum right here. You are most likely to find Smash Brothers and Mario Kart here.
Yes it's a button masher. But the story... wow. This sets the stage for BotW. It does a fantastic job taking you through Zelda's progression leading up to the Calamity. It is more about her Legend than any other LoZ I've ever played.
This gets a five star for the reason I only gave TotK 4 stars. My 8 y/o has that look in her eyes when she plays Wonder. I am only playing this game with her. No solo for me until we beat it. There are games which are great for us adults, but the greatest of games capture the imagination and wonder (😉) of kids and adults.
I'm not a shooter guy. From that perspective it gets 2 stars. Since I started playing because of Ahsoka, having a lightsaber is a blast. I give it four stars there. I also enjoy doing the quest (so far) more than the battle royale aspect. Therefore I settle on 3 stars
Before you hate let me explain. This is a 5 star game, but there is one issue which dropped it for me and I'll get to it in a bit.
First, as of writing this I have not finished the game so aspects of my review might change. I absolutely loved Breath of the Wild and TotK is the perfect sequel. The feel of BotW remains and is expanded in TotK. The added 3 dimensional aspect through exploring the Sky and Underground is fantastic. Everything which was great in BotW is made even better in TotK.
The storyline of TotK is very cohesive. Each cut scene/flashback/memory adds elements to understanding what's going on in the game and even helps solve some of the "big questions" Link is facing. I made finding the memories a priority before I even attempt any of the dungeons.
Overall I did like the Sheikah Slate abilities from BotW better than the Zonai abilities. This is mostly because of my playstyle. The ability to create devices and contraptions is cool but I find myself searching for other solutions first. Fuse is great for using with arrows, but I would rather have decent weapons rather than having to add a giant boulder onto a sword and have this monstrosity on my back. Ascend is amazing. It is my favorite ability in TotK. Rewind is ok but I haven't done much with it at this point. I often find myself wishing for the bombs and cryonis from BotW. These are just a matter of my preferences. I realize others will play the game differently and use some of the abilities more than I do.
Ok. Here it is. The reason I only gave this a 4 star rating. The Gloom feels too much like a horror game and scares my 8y/o. She loves BotW and was looking forward to this game. I find myself encouraging her to play BotW instead of TotK and that bothers me. Yes, this is a fantastic game for us old guys, but if a Zelda game can't be played by a child then it missed what should be its target audience. I couldn't imagine it being 1988 and 8y/o me having nightmares from Zelda II (and yes its difficulty was a different type of nightmare.) I love Zelda games today because 8y/o me was able to play Zelda II. My daughter not being able to play TotK because it is too scary is my biggest disappointment in the Zelda franchise.
This is Zelda for me. This is the first one I played and the basis for playing Zelda irl as a kid. I still play this one. I've never beat it, but I love it.
Edit. I finally beat it. Still my favorite Zelda game and one I will keep playing.
A fun and addictive game and I do recommend playing it. However, the few elements I have issues with keep it from being a 5 star game.
I absolutely despise the ability to retreat. It disproportionately hurts the person who was winning (only getting half the cubes of what they would have got) while reducing the number of cubes lost by the one who retreats.
The other complaint I have is there is no upgrading of cards. The upgrading ability in the game is strictly aesthetic. The cards look better and flashy, but there is no difference between a base level card and a fully (infinite) upgraded card when it comes to game play. There should be a way to upgrade the card's ability or power or lower its cost. Imaging the drive to upgrade if the cost dropped by 1 (min. 1) when you reach infinite level. Make upgrading a little more difficult than it is now and you would add a powerful motivation to work at the game and upgrade.
As someone new to Smash Bros this is a bit overwhelming with all the character options. Plus, never having played a SSB game the concept of "off stage" is really hard to get used to and I make myself fall off all the time.
2nd Update on request of @elrey. Everything said before still holds, but I raised it some. I've had the game for a year now and it is slowly growing on me. Who you play with matters. Setting the rules preferences for online play helps. A lot less of the craziness of trying to learn everything, but still too many characters to allow someone to pick the game up and easily slide in. I think it will max out at 3/5 for me.
We've had this for a few weeks and my youngest loves it. She'll be off on her own playing and we'll hear her laughing when Kirby becomes something new and silly.
What can I say. This is the gold standard of gaming for me. Is it fun? Is it challenging (as a 9 year old with the square controller)? Do you get better by playing thus making it enjoyable as you reach a new stage? The answers are yes and why most of my great gaming memories are tied up in this game
Mario Party, but with Muppets on a cruise ship! And truth be told, I enjoy these mini games more than any Mario Party I've ever played. (I played it on a PS2)
My dad wasn't a gamer so I have very few gaming memories with him. But Bugs Bunny Crazy Castle is one of them. I remember taking turns working through the levels and making a list of the level codes so we could return to the current level. (I might still have the list too.) I found out much later that my dad stayed up late to beat the game. He then helped me with the game never letting on that he had worked through it.
Adding to the memories, I have introduced this game to my daughters and they love it. What a wonderful experience to be on this side of the game.
I couldn't wait for this game to be released. I loved X-Wing and played it non stop. When TIE Fighter was announced I saved my money and begged dad to take me to the store to get it. What a wonderful game this was. Challenging and entertaining. Everything a teenage boy could ask for in a Star Wars game.

I play this way too much. The best part of this game is the tracks change every 2 weeks. That's what keeps it fun and why I think the added the expansion pass tracks to MK8.
I absolutely love this game. I gave it 4 stars as an average between solo and online mode. The game is at its best when played with others. Especially if playing with others like myself who enjoy using special shots to screw with your opponents. (I also enjoy being the victim of a well placed special shot.)
There was nothing bigger than the release of SMB3. I remember the joy of checking the mailbox and finding the Nintendo Power Super Mario Bros. 3 edition. Even today, I love this game. It is perhaps the only retro game from my childhood I will pick up and still enjoy playing.
