“The very existence of flamethrowers proves that sometime, somewhere, someone said to themselves, 'You know, I want to set those people over there on fire, but I’m just not close enough to get the job done.” - George Carlin
For the first time in a long time, there's nothing that I'm so hotly anticipating that I'm following closely.... so for now it's the Elden Ring Expansion and World of Goo 2
Anticipated
These games may not be out yet, but the release date is on your calendar in Sharpie, and you'll be one of the first gamers to fire em up.
Kirby is still lingering. Midnight suns is new but interesting enough to hold my attention. I'm trying to give Tomb Raider another try. AC6, I just need to buckle up and plow through the final chapter(s).
Backlog (want to play)
Air your dirty laundry here. What has gone into your backlog??
Fairly certain these show up on MOST people's list. I will say this, unexpected breakouts for my were Remnant and Baldurs. Remnant because it was a complete game at 50 bucks thag did everything better than the first. Baldurs was a game I had no interest in playing until it was gifted to me. And I've had a blast playing it with friends ever since.
Best of 2023
List/rank your favorite games of 2023, released in 2023.
Side bosses have some of the high difficulty levels and I think it's BECAUSE they're not necessary that devs add the extra challenge. Malenia, Sephiroth (KH version), Crawmerax, etc. Then there's Monster Hunter where every fight is a hard boss fight to some degree. WoW and Destiny requires massive team coordination, or at least it used to. Descent 2 has one of my hard walls ever, and Armored Core 6 has recency bias but a certain boss filtered tons of newbies to the series.
Top 10 Games with the Hardest Boss Fights
Rank your top 10 games that contain the hardest boss fights.
Had to stretch and include games that were in ps4 but had ps5 versions. I tried FF16 but wasn't exactly enthralled by it so it didn't make the cut. But it's a damn solid list.
Top 10 PlayStation 5 Games
Rank your Top 10 games for the PlayStation 5 AKA the PS5.
I avoided using multiples in the same series so I just added the best from that series. Special call out to Red Faction which was an amazing shooter at the time. And then there's vice city, where I would take a helicopter to the beach and use it to.... mow the sand.
Top 10 PlayStation 2 Games
List your top 10 games from the original PlayStation 2, also known as the PS2
Not an exhaustive list, just what I've done for 2022 so far. And considering the difficulty or extensive nature of some of these games, I'm pretty proud of what I've done this year.
Completed
You did it. You beat the final boss. These are the games you have finished.
1: Remnant 2 is my underrated gem of 2023. 50 bucks, no mtx, replayability. it's gold in this day and age.
2: Cyborg Justice is an old school brawler with a twist of being a robot that can hack other robot parts off and use them.
3: Kill it with fire lets my inner pyro flourish.
4: Have a nice death: an amazing rogue lite that covers heavy material in a fun and unique way.
5: Gloomhaven is DnD lite but heavy on lore, strategy, and cards.
6: Gunfire reborn is another awesome rogue lite whose art style seems simplistic but has deep mechanics and infinite replayability.
Recommended
A little different from your Favorites, these are the games you'd tell a friend to check out. Maybe they're underrated, maybe they're cult classics, but these are the ones you're always mentioning to people.
Soul Calibur has been my fighting game staple for year.
Primal Rage: Man I remember riding my bike every day to blockbuster to see if they got it in
MvC2: Nuff said
SSMBU: Platform fighting perfected
Bloody Roar: Who doesn't want to change into an animal to maul their opponent?
Fighting Masters: An underrated Genesis fighting game.
Tatsunoko vs Capcom: Amazing fighting game on the Wii, and the only place I can fight as one of my all time favorite anime protagonists, Tekkaman Blade
Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3: Like smash brothers in that Everyone's here!
Eternal Champions: Made that 6 button genesis controller worth it
Virtua Fighter 2: Kage > everyone
Top 10 Fighting Games
List and rank your top ten (and only ten) fighting games.
Games where resource management is key. But also games that show exploration and depth of the world are amazing too.
Green Games
If planet Earth played video games, which would be its favorites? These are the games that celebrate our planet, by showing the beauty of nature, raising awareness for climate issue, encouraging sustainability, etc.
Some might think parts of these games are intense but they all definitely have more chill parts. Some of them require critical thinking, which helps me slow down my roll and take things one step at a time.
Top 10: Relaxing Games
Rank your top 10 games when you need a chill vibe.
Tried to keep it to non-cross platform games. Some later came out on other systems but the originals were Xbox exclusive. Not a bad list if I do say so myself.
Top 10 Xbox Games
Rank your top 10 games (and only 10!) for the original Xbox.
In no particular order:
Gran Turismo: a realistic driving simulator using old playstation controller, I challenge you to get S ranks on all races.
Dark Souls: arguably more difficult than the sequels and variants as it doesn't have the quality of life changes.
Super Meat Boy: while I've beaten the game, getting top rank on all maps is damn near impossible. The only thing keeping me coming back is the quick respawns.
Monster Hunter Tri: no QoL from the later games, AND underwater combat. Bah.
Cuphead: when you fail and the game shows you that you were on the final phase is just rage bait.
Battletoads: never could make it past the speeder bike section.
Contra: if you said you beat it without the Konami code, I'd say you're lying without proof.
Adventure Island: you have a stone throwing hammer, the can one shot you....
Ninja Gaiden: you need precise movements and attack/defense mechanics.
Tenchu: you don't want to fight in this game, and if you get caught it's going to be a fight. Don't get caught.
Top 10 Hardest Games
Rank your top ten hardest games. Ten and only ten!
Have to request Unreal Tournament 2k4 and Half Life Alyx since those aren't available. But the list, in no particular order: Doom Eternal was amazing no matter what the naysayers think. Pistol Whip/SuperHot/Half Life Alyx demonstrate the power of VR. Halo 3 brought so much to the franchise. Descent 2 was 360 degree of freedom perfected. Quake 3 showed how quick and fast you need to be to survive in arena shooters. Unreal 2k4 had so much going for it (more than just point and shoot at enemies). And Fallout New Vegas, oh the hours I spend in the Mojave plotting to destroy Mr. House.
Top 10 First Person Shooters
Rank your 10 favorite games that fall into the first person shooter category.
Only up to 10!
Fair representation across various categories. Got some FPS, adventure, action rpg, puzzler. These games combined shared my highest amount of playtime so if that doesn't warrant this list, I don't know what does.
Mt. Rushmore
These are your top 4 games of all time. No more, no less.
Not sure why, but we just started collecting them.
Top 10: Collect-a-Thon
List and rank up to 10 of your favorite games that you could call a "collect-a-thon." These may be genre-bending and cross into other groups, but these are games where there is an overarching "gotta catch 'em all" vibe to these games. List those games that you need to collect in.
My top 3 all have special places in my heart while my runners up had some level of impact on my gaming career.
What are your 3? (FOR PODCAST GUESTS ONLY)
Would love each person who appears on the podcast to complete this list AFTER their episode airs, listing the 3 games mentioned (plus honorable mentions) in order. Will be fun to see the most listed games! (AGAIN: Do NOT fill out this list unless you've been on the What are your 3? podcast)
Ok, the Duke Nukem Forever, I can explain..... see I was young and impressionable and even ordered the collector's edition. But I can say this....it was a game.
This list could get way too big so I don't even know if it would be possible to rank these. I love some of them enough to have gotten tattoos. I could talk endlessly about any of these games for hours.
These two games dominated the first half of my year. Whatever else came out wasn't able to hold my attention. Considering the size of these two, I'd say my first half of 2022 was spent well.
