The Dreamcast is a home video game console released by Sega on November 27, 1998, in Japan, September 9, 1999, in North America, and October 14, 1999, in Europe. It was the first in the sixth generation of video game consoles, preceding Sony's PlayStation 2, Nintendo's GameCube, and Microsoft's Xbox. The Dreamcast was Sega's final home console, with its discontinuation in 2001 marking the end of the company's eighteen years in the console market.
I only had one friend who got this, so admittedly I barely played it.
I’ve heard it claimed that it was ahead of its time, but what a sad ending to Sega’s time in the console market.
And what was with that weird remote?!
I think Sega was better off switching to focusing on games!
Controller was goofy and games horrible. I really wanted to like this since Saved up for it with my $5.15 an hour job. I worked at Blockbuster (whaaat?) when this was out and played just about all the games. Only good game was NFL 2K.
I loved this thing. Sonic adventures 1/2 are still the best sonic games to ever come out. Power stone was arguably the best fighting game ever. Phantasy star online introduced consoles to online co-op. It wasn’t flashy, but they gave us some good titles. Unfortunately I feel the Dreamcast started strong and failed to keep it going
Sonic and Crazy Taxi were definitely favorites. I remember comparing this to the N64. N64 definitely had better games but from a performance perspective the Dreamcast was surprising.
The system itself was not great, but it still had some really sun games! Hours of Sonic Adventures and Crazy Taxi. If you’re looking at sega systems, go for the genesis.
This system was ahead of its time in a few ways, like the portable VMUs that plug into the controllers and the built-in modem. I enjoyed Sonic Adventure, Crazy Taxi, Tony Hawk 2, Chu Chu Rocket, Skies of Arcadia and a handful of other games on this. Once the PS2 came around, I put this down like most people. Maybe things would have been different if the competition hadn't been so stiff.
A system that I never owned but played at a friends house. Played a lot of Sonic, Crazy Taxi, and Football 2k5 which some to believe the best football game ever. It had a lot of potential but I think at this point the market & Sega were going different directions. This wasn't a very popular system to have in my area of the world.
Sega's hailmary. In my opinion they didn't score that touchdown but they did catch it and get tackled at the one yard line. It's a fun console with great games, but it just couldn't keep Sega afloat. Sonic Adventures, Crazy Taxi, the Original 2K sports series (I could write a masters dissertation on World Series Baseball 2K1), and Hydro Thunder. These games were amazing and this console was their first debuts. I'm really looking forward to the next Sega console. Hopefully it's not disc based though...
This system may not have taken off like it could have but I would consider it Sega’s “Wii”. It may not have competed with the N64 and PS at the time but the controller screen did add some value, especially with sports games as you could select your plays without your partner seeing. Also Sega at the time still had some big name titles that benefitted from the system upgrade. Unfortunately Sega was already on a downhill at this point and the system didn’t get the shelf life it could’ve had.
Another system with so much potential. The first system to offer a built in modem, the online gaming could have made this so great. The drawback was there was no LAN support, which would have made it so much better, and it possibly could have kept up with the PlayStation 2. Not only that, this followed a dismal Sega Saturn run, which left consumers on the low end of trust in the brand.
What could have been. Sega's last foray into the console game. I really wish this system could have panned out as I have always liked Sega and their systems. The controllers were weird, but the added screen was pretty cool. When we would play football games and the fact you could see what play you wanted to select and not have your opponent know it too was a nice touch. Internet capable could have been implemented better. I did dabble a bit with burned games that my friends and I shared. Overall I wish it turned out better but sometimes they just fall.
