Descendants is a mobile game based on the 2015 American musical fantasy Disney Channel television film of the same name. It is a spin-off of the fairy tale Beauty and the Beast. After their marriage they unite all fairy tale kingdoms into the United States of Auradon and become queen and king of the new state. All villains become outcasts on the slum-like island Isle of the Lost where a barrier prevents them from using magic. Twenty years later their son Ben is preparing to be crowned king. His first proclamation is to give the children of some villains the chance to experience life on the other side. The four who are invited are Carlos, son of Cruella de Vil; Jay, son of Jafar; Evie, daughter of the Evil Queen; and Mal, daughter of Maleficent. Maleficent is aware of this rare opportunity and has something up her sleeve. The children joins the Auradon Prep institution where a boarding school drama quickly unfolds with two groups: AK (Auradon Kids) and VK (Villain Kids), with people switching sides based on their relationships and behaviour.

The player becomes a new character in the universe and has to role play. There are many visual novel-like conversations with other characters with multiple options that influence the relationships. Most of the game is presented as a series of tasks to help others, such as doing a sports practice, preparing for a party, sewing costumes for a school play, painting portraits and so on. All of these tasks are presented with identical mechanics where the player taps one of the green circles in the background to complete the activity, which consumes energy. Most of the game is spent moving between locations, talking to characters and going on scavenger hunts. At the start of the game a male or female character can be chosen and customized. There are numerous options for the skin tone, hair style, clothes and accessories. New items are earned regularly and the player is encouraged to switch often. Many of these can only be accessed by spending the basic or premium currencies. With each completed activity a currency is earned, coins as the basic currency and graduation hats that act as experience for a global player level. Medallions are the premium currency and red Disney hearts provide energy for the energy/stamina system that decreases with each started task. Medallions are bought with real money to skip the waiting times to start a mission. The player has to wait, spend real money or watch advertisements to earn enough energy to continue playing. Many tasks have a separate meter where a certain amount of purple spirit crests need to be collected before a task is fully completed. Completing tasks contributes 'spirit' to earning a Legendary status at the school, which is something most of the students aim for. A scooter is used to move between locations such as the Tourney Field, Gallery of Villains and Carnival Grounds. After meeting characters they stay in touch when they are added to the character's JMNI, a fantasy version of a cell phone.
