I came here to chew bubble gum and play video games, and I got some bubblegum right here. You are most likely to find Smash Brothers and Mario Kart here.
This game is more of BOTW, which sounds great on paper, but its also more of the things I didn't like about BOTW. More weapon breaks, more sidequests taking you away from the main story, much much more area to aimlessly wander. This is one of the few Zelda games that I put down and didn't pick back up. I want to, if only to finish the story. Maybe when I do finally complete it I'll give it the 4th star if the ending sells me on it. I want to like this game more than I do. And there are great things to it. The powers and being able to build things is a lot of fun. But overall, not the best Zelda game in my opinion. Not even the best Switch Zelda game.
I thought Breath of the Wild was the best game of all time, but then this one came out. If I could only play only one game for the rest of my life, this would be it. So beautiful, so immersive, and so satisfying.
How have I not reviewed this? It built on everything Breath of the Wild did and improved. While that original exploration of BOTW could not be recreated it certainly made up for it in the amount of content. It reminded me of going back to my favorite spots in my home town.
I'm reviewing this after finally completing the game. I set a handful of goals early on during my first play through and I met them all after about 500 hours of play time. From this side of completion, the only question that remains is was it worth it?
Absolutely, without debate.
Going back into Hyrule was like going on vacation to a place I had visited before where improvements had been made since the last time I visited. I knew the hot spots from before and wasn't disappointed to find them still there and still important for the most part. The new places, the new hotness, had everything that I loved about the old hangouts with new and exciting things to do and people to meet. It was familiar and comfortable and at the same time it was exciting and dangerous.
There was nothing disappointing about the experience. I find myself hoping for multiple DLCs to give me a chance to go back and continue to explore and uncover more adventures. (This review is being written the day after it was announced that no DLCs are planned, but we'll see about that)
I can't recommend this game highly enough. So much was just right and so much was beyond what I could have hoped for.
When you go into a critique of anything, I believe it hinders a viewer’s enjoyment to limit their appreciation by what they feel, during consumption.
Some games are meant to frustrate you. Some movies are meant to make you feel bad.
I try to always base any review I make, whether it be movie or game, with one simple question:
“Does the piece successfully accomplish what it set out to do, in terms of its own thesis statement?”
Sure, I’d love if I could play as Wario in this game. It would be the perfect game.
TOTK gives you its thesis statement the moment you jump off that first sky island. From then on out, it’s constantly capitalizing on its well-crafted gameplay loop, and expands on the player’s expectations in every possible way.
This game perfectly accomplished what it set out to do. You’ll be in tears, about how massive this kingdom can be.
I have a LONG way to go with this game and reserve my right to update this:
They've iterated on Breath of the Wild fantastically. The thing I keep thinking is that they both have and have not thought of everything. The possibilities feel limitless in the game for how to solve puzzles, approach battles, even just basic travel. I've also said that the thing I am most impressed with is that they're absolutely crushing addressing both BotW and new players. My 8 YO daughter hasn't played Breath and the game is catering perfectly to her learning. I can skip what I don't need for tutorials. If you didn't vibe with Breath though, this won't be for you, though I feel the mainline story is a bit more straightforward so far. Truly exemplary game though.
Follow up upon "completion":
I'm truly amazed and staggered by the scope of this game. I completed the narrative but there is so much else to do. I got MAYBE half of the Depths open. So much on the surface dangling out there. Amazing. Truly mind blowing. The final battle music and visuals were truly stunning.
I am 70-80 hours in and ready to declare this the best game of all time. BOTW brought fresh open world exploration to the series, and executed it perfectly. Every part of the world had something interesting. Tears of the Kingdom has that same level of quality in the environments and redid a lot of the ground map AND added in the sky and the depths!
Exploring the world is my favorite part of the game but the new abilities are extremely fun and well thought out. I feel like each ability could be a core mechanic for a game on its own, and they have them all here.
As if that wasn’t enough, there’s the crazy zonai building aspect of the game. I haven’t gone too far with this yet but it feels like the possibilities are endless. QoL improvements from BOTW are there, and the story has improved. Puzzles are short and sweet with several ways to solve them in most cases. I’ll be playing this for a long time, and don’t want it to end.
I so appreciate the emphasis on making a game that was already well loved essentially a sandbox. It’s a creative’s dream and only improves on BOTW in terms of inventory navigation and UX quality of life.
Name another game where it was the GOAT, then a sequel is made that becomes the new GOAT. This game is awesome. Every puzzle and shrine has multiple ways of solving them. Things I wanted in BOTW like better weapon/equipment management, they gave us. You can do everything in BOTW and more with this. The story was a little lacking in BOTW, TotK addressed that and provided an amazing story. I know this game isn't for everyone, but this really is the ultimate game. Action/adventure/puzzles/creativity, the list goes on and on. This game is in a league of its own. 95 hours in and I still have so much to do and explore. Amazing!
Dude, you can BUILD stuff! In a Zelda game! Like, pretty much whatever you think of! It's so much fun. I don't even care about Zelda or Hyrule or anything. I'm just a silly lil Linky boi runnin' around causing mischief and doing unspeakable things to Koroks. Ggs all around.
this game isn't perfect, but the flaws are so minor on the scope of well over a hundred hours of enjoyment, that I absolutely believe this deserves all 5 stars.
I was skeptical on this because i got super burnt out from BOTW. I gave the series another shot and don’t regret it one but. Aside from the fun glitches the game is always exciting with adventuring between the 3 areas of sky overworld and depth. I’m only about 50 hours in the game and can easily see another 100-200 just to beat the game. 10/10 would introduce this game to my grandmother
Before you hate let me explain. This is a 5 star game, but there is one issue which dropped it for me and I'll get to it in a bit.
First, as of writing this I have not finished the game so aspects of my review might change. I absolutely loved Breath of the Wild and TotK is the perfect sequel. The feel of BotW remains and is expanded in TotK. The added 3 dimensional aspect through exploring the Sky and Underground is fantastic. Everything which was great in BotW is made even better in TotK.
The storyline of TotK is very cohesive. Each cut scene/flashback/memory adds elements to understanding what's going on in the game and even helps solve some of the "big questions" Link is facing. I made finding the memories a priority before I even attempt any of the dungeons.
Overall I did like the Sheikah Slate abilities from BotW better than the Zonai abilities. This is mostly because of my playstyle. The ability to create devices and contraptions is cool but I find myself searching for other solutions first. Fuse is great for using with arrows, but I would rather have decent weapons rather than having to add a giant boulder onto a sword and have this monstrosity on my back. Ascend is amazing. It is my favorite ability in TotK. Rewind is ok but I haven't done much with it at this point. I often find myself wishing for the bombs and cryonis from BotW. These are just a matter of my preferences. I realize others will play the game differently and use some of the abilities more than I do.
Ok. Here it is. The reason I only gave this a 4 star rating. The Gloom feels too much like a horror game and scares my 8y/o. She loves BotW and was looking forward to this game. I find myself encouraging her to play BotW instead of TotK and that bothers me. Yes, this is a fantastic game for us old guys, but if a Zelda game can't be played by a child then it missed what should be its target audience. I couldn't imagine it being 1988 and 8y/o me having nightmares from Zelda II (and yes its difficulty was a different type of nightmare.) I love Zelda games today because 8y/o me was able to play Zelda II. My daughter not being able to play TotK because it is too scary is my biggest disappointment in the Zelda franchise.
Time for the official review. This game makes BOTW, former game of the year, look like a demo. Every aspect of the game has improved. The weapon combination system is fun and creative, the new building system adds layers and layers to accomplishing quests, and the map has expanded and changed. I love seeing the differences made to the iconic landscapes of BOTW. The cutscenes give life to the story in a way I thought BOTW missed. I'm engaged and want to complete every task. Nothing seems like a chore even though most of the time my gameplay involves exploring, climbing, and saving Koroks. I spent 100 hours in BOTW, I'll spend 150 easily in this one. Here's your 2023 GOTY, Nintendo does it again.
I am having so much fun after I got off the sky island I explored under hyrule and I am having fun with fuse and ultra hand! This was the opposite of a crew recommendation! The exact opposite of a crew recommendation! I recommended this to the crew!
Sometimes, I think 5 star reviews get thrown around too freely. This is not one of those cases! This game is amazing! The sheer size of the map you need to explore is overwhelming, in a good way. You can go explore for hours without touching a single quest! You do not have to like Zelda games to find enjoyment in this game!
So far, it's a 5 star game. I have played it nonstop for the last 6 hours (since i got hime with it at 11:30 cst last night)... eventually I'll go to bed. Anyway, they took what made Breath of The Wild so much fun, a has made it better. There seems to be more focus on puzzles this time around, and the game feels more difficult.
