Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is a 2018 crossover fighting game developed by Bandai Namco Studios and Sora Ltd. and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo Switch. It is the fifth installment in the Super Smash Bros. series, succeeding Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U. The game follows the series' traditional style of gameplay: controlling one of the various characters, players must use differing attacks to weaken their opponents and knock them out of an arena. It features a wide variety of game modes, including a campaign for single-player and multiplayer versus modes. Ultimate features 89 playable fighters, including all characters from previous Super Smash Bros. games alongside newcomers. The roster ranges from Nintendo mascots to characters from third-party franchises.

The title says it all: this is the Ultimate Super Smash Bros. game! While the game was lacking some features in the beginning (like a stage builder...), this game has been great since day 1. Only real gripe I have with this game is the clip editor isn't very intuitive, but I rarely use it.

The Fighter Pass DLC packs are definitely worth it too. Why not add gaming icons like Banjo & Kazooie, Minecraft's Steve, and Sora to the already crazy roster of video game legends?

What can i say. This will probably be the last smash game made and it’s been a great 5 years. Sakurai gave us so much in terms of new characters in base and Dlc. Great stages. Fun trophy’s. Lots of events. The game today is still going strong in terms of competitive and unless a new one comes this will be the new melee with gameplay going on for 10 plus years. This game truly was the ultimate polished smash game. Thanks for all the memories

The way I feel about this game makes me wanna say, "I hate this game", or "Game bad" but I do love this game through and through. It has allowed me to meet communities, and play a game with friends that anyone could enjoy. This game lets you have a great time with friends or make them rage cause they can't stand your character (@seth :3) Almost every character is viable if someone enjoys them, and if you're someone who wants competition there is always that too even after all that the game has still more to offer, from a decent 'story mode' to some fun minigames to try here and there. I truly believe that if you want to have some fun with a huge, or even small group give this game a try, it lets you play however you want, to whatever fits your playstyle. So glad I came to this franchise all the way back in Brawl. 5 out of 5, would always recommend as a group game.

Absolutely one of the best (if not the best) games in the series and its an absolute blast to play no matter the situation. Perfect for both 8 person parties, 1 on 1 duels, or even the solo players out there. If you have even a shred of interest, try it out. You wont regret it.

This game really is something, huh? It truly is, in terms of pure numbers, the magnum opus of Masahiro Sakurai. 80+ playable characters, each with their own unique personality and move set. More than 100 stages, and over 1000 songs to pick from. And the amount of hard work and effort it took to complete this game is infinite. I have had a ton of fun with this game, but the more I played, the less satisfying it's become for me. The competitive aspect of this game is still fun to watch, but having to master dozens of matchups takes an enormous amount of commitment and dedication that simply isn't there for me, and I've slowly stopped playing the game. There is, however, the added caveat that the developers of Smash Bros. never intended this series to be competitive, by any stretch of the imagination. And for that, with the viewpoint of a non-competitive player, this game is amazing. Yes, there is no subspace emissary, trophies, or other single-player fun like in previous iterations. However, game modes like the new-and-improved classic mode, stage builder, home-run contest, World of Light (although not hitting the peak of storytelling like Brawl's Subspace Emissary, it is still a fun mode), squad strike, and, if you are a complete psychopath, getting every single character into Elite Smash. And the communities I have joined as a result of playing this game have impacted my life in such a way, that words are not enough to describe how great it has been to...absolutely destroy every single one of you with my worst characters! But in all seriousness, I thank every one of you that I have played in an arena seriously, or casually. Although I have not played a long session of Smash Bros. in a while, that urge will eventually come back. 5/5 stars.

sigh... I mean, as much as I hate on this game, I can't give it anything lower than 5 stars considering how it improved the franchise so much. My first smash game was Super Smash Brothers for Wii U, and I had a blast playing. I never tried to do anything even slightly competitive, mostly just played it with my brother and e had a ton of fun. Super Smash Brothers Ultimate comes around and I am actively watching the reveals, even though I did not have a switch at the time. I got my switch late 2019 with a few games, most predominantly this one. To this day it is the game I have the second most hours on. It honestly is such an improvement in every way. Sure, it doesn't have trophies like Smash for Wii U, sure it doesn't have the subspace emissary from Brawl, sure it doesn't have quite the competitive hype of Melee, and sure it doesn't have... uh... numbers in the title like 64, but the things it gives us instead is just amazing. SO many characters, SO many stages, you see there is really no reason that I can give it anything less. Except that the announcer doesn't shout "SUPER SMASH BROTHERS" in the intro so 0 STARS.

There’s a reason “Ultimate” is at the end of this game. Sakurai went all out to try and make this as if it was the last ever Smash game. Having all the characters (even the lazy Melee clones) and giving them their unique twist. Including a massive story mode which includes spirits from loads of games to pay tribute since everyone has dreams of what character they want in the game. Loads of music from all the games, and you just have a masterpiece. Also its just right in the competitive meta: easy to learn but hard to master, and while there are tier lists of characters, you can learn any character and still be viable with them, whereas in Melee (and I loved Melee, don’t misunderstand) people can just glitch their way to victory, and only a fraction of the characters were any good.

Oh, and because Sakurai gave me Richter from Castlevania this is an auto 5 stars. At that rate he could have included Barney the Dinosaur and God knows what else, and I’d still be happy. #thankyousakurai

It's an ultimate classic that has literally grown up with the millennial generation. I've probably clocked in about three human years of game play on this franchise.

Any young kids out there that wanna get in on a fun "battle" video game to play with your real life friends in real life, play this game. Forget online play, call over the squad and play video games the way they're meant to be played; by crushing each others souls and ruining a little bit of your friendship face to face.

Love this game, so many characters, super fun to play as a group!

Bad:
-I've played this game so many times and I still don't know how to do anything on purpose.
-My kids always want to play "the fighting game" but only if "everyone be's nice." Besides the grammatical errors, this approach is problematic because if you can't try to destroy each other ... what is the point? This is a user error and not a problem with the game but worth noting imo. Inevitably someone does something not nice and my daughter yells at everyone. She is scary. So look out for that.

As someone new to Smash Bros this is a bit overwhelming with all the character options. Plus, never having played a SSB game the concept of "off stage" is really hard to get used to and I make myself fall off all the time.

2nd Update on request of @elrey. Everything said before still holds, but I raised it some. I've had the game for a year now and it is slowly growing on me. Who you play with matters. Setting the rules preferences for online play helps. A lot less of the craziness of trying to learn everything, but still too many characters to allow someone to pick the game up and easily slide in. I think it will max out at 3/5 for me.

A near perfect "send-off" for the franchise and Sakurai. They did what everyone wanted and added a ton of characters and stages. Sure there could have always been more, and some that got in were questionable, but you can't fault them due to having 89 fighters. Balancing is always going to be tough, but I feel that they did a good job making sure the competitive scene wasn't just dominated by 1 or 2 characters. And most people could be good with a wide variety of characters.

Graphics and gameplay were great, with a speed perfected for both casual and competitive play.

Great game modes as always, including a much improved single player over Smash 4. However, this still could have been better like the campaign mode in Brawl which is the best IMO.

Only other slight gripe is the online structure not being set up to easily separate causal and competitive play like it was on Smash 4. This was the only area you can argue they took a step backwards. The arena system was a nice addition however.
