Super Smash Bros. (retroactively referred to as Super Smash Bros. 64 or Smash 64) is a 1999 crossover fighting video game developed by HAL Laboratory and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo 64. It was first released in Japan on January 21, 1999, in North America on April 26, 1999, and in Europe on November 19, 1999. The first installment in the Super Smash Bros. series, it is a crossover between several different Nintendo franchises, including Mario, The Legend of Zelda, Star Fox, Yoshi, Donkey Kong, Metroid, F-Zero, Mother, Kirby, and Pokémon. It presents a cast of characters and locations from these franchises and allows players to use each character's unique skills and the stage's hazards to inflict damage, recover health, and ultimately knock opponents off the stage.

A perfect start to an amazing franchise. One of the best multiplayer games of all time, and one of the primary drivers of the couch co-op era.

Hours upon hours of replayability with friends, as well as fun single player modes.

The simplicity of the combat made it fun and easy to pick up, while also allowing a high skill ceiling for competitive players that defined the smash franchise we know today.

Other than comparing it to todays games in terms of graphics and speed (which is unfair) I honestly can't think of any way you can argue against a 5 star rating for this one.

I was hooked on the idea of this from the very first commercial I saw. Taking all these classic characters from wildly varying types of games and just letting them beat the heck out of each other sounds pretty one-note on paper, but they sure pulled it off. The characters, moves, stages, and soundtrack are all just fantastic. They improved with future entries but this time around they did exactly what they set out to accomplish.

Just pure fun - I played this more than any other smash since I brought it to my dorm freshman year where it quickly became our go-to 4-player game. This is the only smash I can confidently say I’m good at and I’ll accept a challenge from anyone, anytime!

There's something charming about the simplicity of this concept that would launch a worldwide phenomenon. Before there were too many characters and stages to count, we had the most notable Nintendo names duking it out. The stages are still some of the best and every Smash game released since owes a lot to the one that started it all. Now, can we please get this on the NSO?

@tucknuts and I had a dream, a dream where video games would cross franchises to battle it out. Then we learned that such a game would be coming. And it was glorious. Secret characters were a thing but the four they had were great. Cue Happy Together. Many a great nights in college playing this one on the 64 also.

The game doesn't hold up to the sequels, but when this game came out, the world changed. This game was such an amazing change in fighting (party game, whatever) and it has one of the best gaming commercials ever made. When it finally comes out on the switch expansion, I'll be excited to play it again with friends.
