I am still playing this game but on a pause.
I was really enjoying it and playing along but then something happened. I am not sure if it was my ADHD hyperfixation wearing off or what but all of a sudden I have to go find these parts to gather to get an item or go create a song for the frogs that I just got overwhelmed and just have not turned it back on.
It's good, but it's definitely not as amazing as your nostalgia might think.
An excellent first entry into RPGs for Mario, but battles quickly become repetitive, and while there are no true random encounters a la early final fantasy or dragon quest, the high amount of enemies to run into means you'll be stopping every few seconds to either battle or run away.
The ability to time attacks and blocks to deal extra damage and build up a combo gauge is nice, and I do especially like that they have a sort of hidden "ok" timing and a perfect timing. We have triple techs now, which are cute, but there's a grand total of 6 in the game and at least one is extremely situational.
The other biggest flaw with this game is the mini game to real game ratio being way off. On the one hand, it's a break from the monotony of combat. On the other hand, the mini games are all truly awful. I have platinum trophies from RPGs that take hundreds of hours and none of them have mini games that are as truly awful as the Yoshi race, the paratrooper climb, the river, and let's not even talk about the horror that is the 6-door challenge and everything after that.
Still the writing is very good, and filled with charm like you'd expect. Total time to beat is probably around 15 hours, my timer has 17.5 but as usual I know I left it idling here and there.
I don't expect to 100% this, I feel like it wouldn't be a ton of fun, just grinding the last 10 levels in order to face off against the super bosses. Honestly this might be a 3 star game, if I'm being honest. But I'll keep it at 4 for now, I think it just falls short of possibly unfair expectations.
Haven't gone all the way through the post game yet, but I wanted to write a review after getting all 7 star pieces to get XP at the end of the season :)
This game is a lot of fun as someone who hasn't played a whole lot of turn-based RPGs outside of Pokemon. I never played the original on the SNES, but from what I've heard, the remaster keeps all of the great qualities of the SNES game and adds onto it.
The game isn't particularly hard on normal, but I found the final boss to be a little difficult since I was a tad underleveled going into it. Going back and grinding a few more levels out though made it much more doable, especially since I had died to it a few times and developed a strategy. The one aspect about this game I didn't really like is the camera angle. The 45 deg. angle the camera has to Mario made some of the few platforming parts of this game a bit tedious for me since I kept missing what are probably meant to be easy jumps.
Other than that though, great game! Will update my review when I get through the post-game content!
I was a fan of the snes version which was overall perfect as is. The remake version definitely adds plenty quality of life additions like fast traveling, faster combat, and swapping party members mid fight.
Main Story wise it's pretty much 1 to 1 with the original so don't expect nothing new.
Combat is the same with the addition of perfect commands to either do aoe hits or take 0 damage. The game even tells you elemental weaknesses and status effects which honestly makes mallow and bowser be good in fights.
The Triple move is a nice addition but my 1st playthrough I only used the clown car barrage (mario, mallow, and bowser) and the healing rainbow ( mario, mallow, and peach). Clown car barrage just smacks everyone about 900 with weakness.
Music is beautiful. The option to go between modern and classic is always a nice touch.
Same for graphics, very beautifully done.
Now the probably biggest thing: the post game content. Once you beat the main villain you will follow a small quest that you rematch some of the bosses including rematching the superboss.
Now the negatives, shocking right? Same as the original the difficulty was pretty easy even on the normal difficulty. Only time I truly was struggling was 1 or 2 post game bosses. Even clown car barrage can instant wipe the smaller enemies and easily wittle down bosses.
Overall I would recommend it of fans of the classic and newcomers that wanna try turn based rpgs.
I was nervous when i saw all the new features but it was perfect . The polished graphics , the new combat system , the group attacks. Going from pixilated graphics that you could barely Comprehend what some of the things were to seeing everything modernized was beautiful.
The game even on normal mode was a bit on the easy side with how timed attacks added splash damage but that doesn’t take anything from the game. (Maybe they’ll add a harder mode in the future ?)
I haven’t started the post game but from what I’ve read the bosses are the real deal. All the original music was added. The mini games are a blast (future challenges??)
One of my favorite changes was the cutscenes the little happy dances when your party levels up and boss intros. It really gave it that extra pizzaz that i never knew i needed.
