Back to formula. Focus on the mini games not on board antics. I love this game. The best thing is that it uses the entire concept of the switch remotes. It's a great game to get back to the series or even introduce the game to new people
This game is ok for being a Mario Party. The boards are nice, and the minigames are creative, but these games can get so blown out of proportion really quickly with stars only being 10 coins.
The ally mechanic is creative too, but a lot of games really become a race to get the most allies so you can take advantage of their small dice to travel more spaces.
Biggest issue with this game is that it's required to be played with a single joycon. Almost every minigame has some kind of motion control or HD rumble feature tied to it.
I played this for a little while with friends and family - it was fun and deserving of 3 stars for continuing the series' enjoyable, frantic variety of minigames. But it seemed very light on content, it was only 4 boards if I remember correctly.
Comparing it to other mario parties is it's downfall. My kids had a blast playing this one, and it was always a fun time together. If 3.5 stars was an option, I'd pick it, but I'll round up.
Not great, not terrible. At best, it's "good", and that's generous. To be honest, I sold mine because I knew once we got Superstars, we'd never go back to the joycon-only style of gameplay.
I honestly enjoy the little gimicks, but the game itself is... not great fun, honestly. It's okay once in a while, but I can't bring myself to play it too often because it gets boring very fast. The maps don't feel great, and the minigames are just alright. Custom dice blocks were a neat feature, but as you'd expect with a ton of characters, some of them are just objectively bad.
I love the Mario Party games. This one unfortunately fell flat. It might be fun with younger kids but it was not a hit around here. Too many little gimmicks like high fives.
Gave it a 5 strictly because I could play with Shy Guy. Also, guessing that Mamba was right as the high 5's thing is a little gimmicky but having kids, watching them with that was a lot of fun. This game was played a lot during down time during pandemic & my favorite of the two Mario Party games on Switch (that I've played, I don't think there's a 3rd).
