OG's know this is 5 stars. I don't think I ever beat this game as a kid. It took me being an adult to beat it. I think its was because I never was afforded the time to sit there in one long gaming session and beat the game. Ya'll young'ns don't know the struggle of no saves and beating a game in one session!
This was, for me (as I assume it was for many on Channel 3), my introduction to gaming (as a Christmas gift at the age of 5). And there could have been no greater introduction!
This game is superb - it is not an understatement that Nintendo saved video games with this masterpiece (especially compared to what came before it)!
Granted, this isn't the best Mario game (not even of its generation), but it deserves 5 stars, both for saving an industry and for turning so many of us into lifelong gamers!
Thank you, Nintendo and Mario!!!
What can I say. This is the gold standard of gaming for me. Is it fun? Is it challenging (as a 9 year old with the square controller)? Do you get better by playing thus making it enjoyable as you reach a new stage? The answers are yes and why most of my great gaming memories are tied up in this game
A great game for sure, but I’ve always preferred Metroid and Zelda, plus I’m just plain not very good at it. I’ve only beaten it once with save states and rewind, and more than anything I wish the physics were less slippery than they are. Nonetheless it is a fun and quirky adventure that everyone into the medium should play at least once, and it’s easy to see why it caught on like it did at the time.
I mean, this is the granddaddy of all Mario games, how can you not rate it highly? It was a good game at the time, is still fun now (I mean, they made a battle royale version of it, similar to Tetris 99, on the Switch. People just love it), and spawned everything Mario today.
Saved the industry. It might be the most classic of classics.
There really is no way to match the first time you play and more importantly beat this game the first time. As an 80s kid, this was an unbelievable accomplishment for video games.
Furthermore it catapulted a franchise and character into super stardom. Mario is easily on the Mt Rushmore of video game characters and likely the most recognizable.
Incredible level design and music that kept players coming back for more.
Being the first SUPER Mario Bros in the series, it set the stage for all the games to come. While it kept some of the basic ideas from Mario Bros, it added so much and created a gameplay system that would be copied many times over by many franchises.
I tell my kids that this game is my Minecraft. I have got it down to about a 10 minute game session in order to beat the game. The game gives me the same satisfaction as solving a Rubik’s cube.
I have the game and watch version and am determined to beat the game is various unique places like on the beach, on a plane, in as many different states as I can.
First time I saw Mario running across the top of the screen It blew my gamer mind like breaking the 4th wall. A timeless classic.
First video game I ever owned on my NES. Well that and Duck Hunt! This game gave me my love for video games and I will always love it for that reason!!
Going from Atari to this was mindblowing when the NES came out! I had been a gamer since I could hold a controller and this is what really sparked my love of gaming.
