This is the first Mario game I remember playing at my house. My aunt and uncle got my sister a NES with this game. It definitely gets a star for nostalgia, but it was a fun game to play. Tanooki suit, running behind the stage, Koopa kids, plenty of awesome things in this game.
For a 2-D world, I was pleasantly surprised with how much they jammed into this. Every world theme was beautifully crafted, full of secrets and filled to the brim with memorable and (sometimes) frustrating characters. Yeah, it took me awhile to find out which castle that promiscuous princess was in, but that’s not what my goal was. I wanted to eliminate the Koopa Bloodline. Every scepter was a notch in my belt until my fated rival with the king, which did not disappoint. Also, magical flutes!
This is my Favorite 2D Mario Game and it was just really fun to experience while playing. I never would have tried to complete it without the quest and I am glad I did complete it. Even if it's not your type of game I'm sure atleast everyone should try it out once.
I can say this is probably the only game I've played where you're literally running from the sun.
Super fun, super addictive, great level design and music.
Without a doubt, this was the BEST game on the NES! As amazing as SMB1 was, this game dialed everything up to 11!
The varied worlds, the plethora of powerups (the Tanooki Suit being my favourite), the secrets to discover all contributed to making this game so much fun to play again and again!
Surely Nintendo couldn't top this game! Or could they...?
This is without a doubt the best Mario game ever made. Period.
Super Mario 3 had it all. Memorable, and potentially infuriating, moments that played out in perfectly appointed levels and a backdrop of some of the earwormiest, and now most iconic, music and sound effects of all time. Thirty years later, I still haven't found a game that hits the same level of satisfaction as finishing a difficult level (probably in an all out sprint) and jumping into the slot-machine-style reward spinner hoping for a 1UP.
All that said, I'm going to take it step further though. I think it could be argued that this is the best video game ever made.
While it can absolutely be argued that games have gotten better (better graphics, better and more interesting control mechanics, etc.), perhaps they're just more, not better. More RAM, more processors, more buttons, more directions to move... Few games, if any, have taken the "more" they have to work with and accomplished what this game did with a plumber, a princess, and 8-bits.
So, as a preface to this review, know that when I was a kid I was a little rule-follower. A little Goody-Two-shoes. A reeeeeeeal Momma's boy. So suffice it to say that when I was at my friend Matt's house and we heard that another kid who lived down the block who we normally didn't hang out with had the new Mario game and we went to his house without telling anyone and were so mesmerized by this incredible breakthrough in gaming that before we realized it the sun had set and I went home and explained to my mother where I'd been and found out she'd been worried sick about me because she had no idea where I was and had been frantically searching all around the neighborhood for me literally for hours at that point, that the icy silence of disappointment I received was so impactful upon me as a person that I would spend a number of minutes writing about it more than 30 years later. And I'd do it all again.
There are some games that stand the test of time. This is one of them. My sister and I played the heck out of this game growing up and my skills still transfer to other side scrolling platformers. There was the right mix of challenge (difficult levels and jumps) variety (ice, water, downhills) and fun (tanooki and frog suits). The items were top-notch and stretched the technical limitations of the NES.
The Mario series is nothing short of excellent and this is the best NES version. I hope to beat it again sometime soon.
I have clear and fond memories of opening this on Christmas Day, I want to say 1992. It stands the test of time better than any NES title and better than a lot of newer games too. For some, it's the greatest SMB game ever made, for others it's the greatest period. The levels, worlds, and power-ups inspired SMB games after it for decades.
Tanooki Suit Mario is how I define Mario 1-3. This game and it's secret whistles still bring back childhood dreams of watching The Wizard and wishing I had that dank ass Power Glove.
No matter how many times Nintendo reinvents Mario, this game was ahead of its time and to this day can be played over and over again. This game bounds with so much to offer after its first two predecessors. A must play for any gamer
I had a lot of fun playing this game growing up. I thought I was cool when I was able to get to the end of the game rather quickly with using the whistle/flute.
As a kid I spent an ENTIRE day going through this game when I was maybe 7 when a babysitter was at our house. My mother was less than thrilled. I can still burn a day straight playing this bad boy but I'm better at it now. 1, 3, 64, and Odyssey are interchangeable at the top tier for me.
My 9 YO has been cracking this and it's his favorite 2D Mario.
There was nothing bigger than the release of SMB3. I remember the joy of checking the mailbox and finding the Nintendo Power Super Mario Bros. 3 edition. Even today, I love this game. It is perhaps the only retro game from my childhood I will pick up and still enjoy playing.
Definitely the best of the NES era Mario games. If you went the hard way and didn’t use shortcuts, you probably threw a controller or two, only to go back and try again.
