The platforming was very airy, and the different islands, while having different environments, still played in a very formulaic fashion. I enjoyed the story though, and the boss fights made Super Sonic feel more meaningful (and the soundtrack was epic)
2 stars for the main game. An extra star for the throwback levels. While I appreciate the attempt to bring something new to the world of Sonic, it sort of falls flat. It's trying a little too hard to emulate the BOTW format, the graphics are dull, and there just isn't the Sonic charm you'd expect.
It was a decent game and one I think worth playing. Tried a little too much to copy BOTW it felt like. The cyber space levels were they best part for me. Make sure to switch difficulty to hard just before the final titan battle for the final boss ending. I would like to see a retro style sonic game next like how they did for TMNT shredders revenge.
I really wanted to like this game. It looks great, which got it 2 stars but, I was disappointed.
Controls are fine, until the game decides you're now playing a 2D platformer almost out of nowhere. Camera angels can get weird. The story is lackluster and the tasks on each island are soooo repetitive. The boss fights should be awesome, but they aren't. Instead Super Sonic flys around and makes short work of them. Only the sometimes weird camera angels make it difficult.
You can see how it was influenced by Mario Odyssey and Breath of the Wild but doesn't come close to that level of game play. Sorry, Sonic!
I went back and forth on whether or not to give this 4 or 5 stars. 4.5 is my honest answer. The game is beautiful, runs smoothly, and is very fun. My only complaints so far is the camera angle gets in your way sometimes, it can be a bit confusing as to what you need to do, when the world first opens up, and Sonic's voice. His voice sounds too much like Knuckles for me. Otherwise, so far its a great game. (This review is based off of 3 hours of gameplay and on Xbox One)
