Sega Genesis
1989-08-14
The Sega Genesis, known as the Mega Drive outside North America, is a 16-bit fourth-generation home video game console developed and sold by Sega. The Genesis was Sega's third console and the successor to the Master System. Sega released it in 1988 in Japan as the Mega Drive, and in 1989 in North America as the Genesis. In 1990, it was distributed as the Mega Drive by Virgin Mastertronic in Europe, Ozisoft in Australasia, and Tec Toy in Brazil. In South Korea, it was distributed by Samsung as the Super Gam*Boy and later the Super Aladdin Boy.

My second system. Got this bad boy on Christmas one morning with the six-pak of games.

Fun system. I didn’t own one but loved playing it at my friends house. Still enjoyed snes a bit more.

Sega Genesis
I never owned a Genesis as a kid. We were a NIntendo (and computer) family growing up. But I did play it a ton at some of my smug friend's homes. While I definitely enjoyed playing it and trying out new games that were never on SNES at the time, I did find we always went back to the SNES most of the time. It has a lot of great games, some extremely overrated mascots, but overall it's a great retro console that fueled the very 'fun' Console Wars of the early 90's.

My childhood obsession. 5 stars brought to you by the Nostalgia Factor™

Sega Genesis
Slick machine. Lack of games was disappointing, but I still liked going to my friend's house and playing the non-snes games.

While I owned the SNES, my best friend owned the Genesis - what was he thinking?! ?
The Genesis was a solid system, but had nowhere near the quality of games as the SNES (at least for my tastes). Sonic was fun, but I’ll take Mario any day.
Though, I will admit that the Genesis version of Aladdin was superior to the SNES.

Sega Genesis
First console I owned. I still remember most of the button combinations for Mortal Combat’s “finish him” moves lol

Sega Genesis
My first system, although called the Megadrive in England so always get super confused, absolutely the best. Would spend hours playing Streets of Rage with my dad.

Sega Genesis brought us Sonic. What else needs to be said? Sega really found a niche here.

Sega Genesis
Never had my own but my friends introduced me to Sonic, the controller was sleek and something new compared to nintendo which u still see in today's controllers.

Sega Genesis
We were a Sega Genesis household before we had an SNES and there was nothing wrong with that. The Sonic run on Genesis alone was killer. Everything was a bit gritter and rougher around the edges compared to Nintendo, but not in a flawed way. The sports games were top tier as well. Some quirky and unique ones on here as well.

Sega Genesis
The Sonic games are obviously classic, but the Genesis never had anything on the SNES

I think the internal console wars for me started between the SNES and the Genesis. SEGA was edgy, dark, and had games like Gunstar Heroes and Jurassic Park.

Sega Genesis
Other than sonic and a handful of other games, I didn’t get nearly as much joy out of this as I did the snes.

Sega Genesis
Literally every game I owned on this was Sonic mainline or spin-off. They were fun but it couldn’t peel me away from NES and SNES for the most part.

Sega Genesis
I really wanted to like the Genesis because I can from a Master System. It looked great and had some enjoyable game too. I think the controller was a step up from previous generations like the Master System and NES but the SNES controller felt much better to me.

Sega Genesis
Very very fond memories of this system, mostly due to introducing me to Sonic Games. I know I’m weird, but Sonic Spinball was my favorite game on this console!

Sega Genesis
Great system with some great games. The controller was more comfortable than the others of the time, but lacked buttons. The 6 button version wasn’t great due to all 6 being thumb buttons.

Sega Genesis
I had the Genesis and not Super Nintendo back in the day. Loved the system and games. I think the D-pad was great, especially for Mortal Kombat moves.

Sega Genesis
Our cousins owned one. It was always fun going to their house and playing games with them. Spent many hours just having a blast
