Sega Game Gear
1991-04-01
The Game Gear is an 8-bit fourth generation handheld game console released by Sega on October 6, 1990, in Japan, in April 1991 throughout North America and Europe, and during 1992 in Australia. The Game Gear primarily competed with Nintendo's Game Boy, the Atari Lynx, and NEC's TurboExpress. It shares much of its hardware with the Master System, and can play Master System games by the use of an adapter. Sega positioned the Game Gear, which had a full-color backlit screen with a landscape format, as a technologically superior handheld to the Game Boy.

Loses a star due to the fact I probably could be retired in the country with all the money spent on batteries.

I loved this handheld. A color screen, able to play the Sega classics that I could only play at a friend's house(didn't have a Genesis). Hours upon hours playing NBA Jam.

Even though it took like 16 AA batteries that lasted 30 minutes, this was ages above the Game Boy in graphics, almost like a portable SEGA.

This felt like a SNES in your hand with a tiny screen. Loved this machine. I remember playing sonic, micro machines and aladdin on this. All the accessories with this machine were a blast too.

Never owned one, but it was a lot of fun to play Sonic handheld at friends houses!

My best friend growing up had one. We spent a lot of time trading and having sleep overs. A great contribution to a great childhood friendship. I always loved Segas game selection and love that they've found their niche in software. But the game gear was awesome.

I played so much Sonic, Power Rangers, and VR Troopers. The biggest downfall, even raiding the TV remote couldn't power this bad boy. It needed something like 6 AA batteries to play. But it was backlit, had good games, and was portable.

I didn’t own one but my friend had one and I was way bigger than him. We (I) mostly played sonic but the novelty of the colour screen and the fact it had a backlight made this one helluva handheld.

I didn't have a Gameboy, I had this little guy and man oh man did I feel superior. All kidding aside, the games were great, the screen and colors were great, especially compared to Gameboy with its monochrome screen. I got ahold of one recently in my ongoing mission to replace my lost youth. It's not as crystal clear as my memory but it was good little system, though the batteries a Game Gear could leave in its wake without the rechargeable battery packs or hard line (the latter of which I have picked up).

My main memories are it was a battery hog, and it had a fun sonic game on it. My brother had one, and I think he accidentally broke it after a few months. The graphics were pretty incredible at the time. I didn’t get to experience any game outside sonic but it seemed the battery consumption made it harder to get into.

My brother had one but I always preferred my Gameboy. Pretty fun though until the batteries died

The biggest thing I remember about this was how fast it drained batteries. Some pretty fun games though.

Game Gear was hands down the best portable system until the Switch came out. Yeah, fight me! I used to rock the big case that held all my games, screen magnifier, Master System cartridge adapter and TV tuner. I had it all for this system because I loved it so much. Sonic, Space Harrier, all of it was awesome. I remember the color screen being so vivid and bright that all the Gameboy fans were crying.
