You are a Knight/paladin/sorceress/barbarian for the king who has lost his sceptre to Arech Dragonbreath. This sceptre somehow contains the kings life force or something. Without it he'll die in 300-900 days depending on which difficulty you select. You need to fill your 5 army slots with different units ranging from soldiers to skeletons, dwarves to dragons, giants to ghosts. You need to find gold, items and artifacts spread over 4 continents. This increases your leadership allowing you to have more and better units under your command.
You also get magic and siege weapons with which you can lay siege to castles, these castles contain villains that you can collect bounties on.
Each villain captured also unlocks a 1 of 20/25 map pieces. Once you have every piece a screenshot of where the sceptre is hidden is revealed. You now need to find that place across one of the 4 continents and search the area which takes a week of in game time. Once you find the sceptre and return it to the king you win. The sceptre location is different every playthrough.
This game is the precursor to what became the might and magic series.
