Pokémon Scarlet and Violet
Pokémon Scarlet and Violet
Pokemon scarlet and violet was an improvement from Pokemon sword and shield but thats not saying much. What the game lacks in pokemon (base game) and graphics it makes up in the fun story of the game. depending on what version you have you will be dealing with either a prehistoric theme or a futuristic theme. The story takes place in you going to an academy to eventually take on the quest of going on a "treasure" hunt. The game itself has 3 stories (victory road, starfall street and path of legends) that you will take part in. The gimmick in this game is odd but it does add some solid thought process in building teams and fighting the raid bosses that will have different attributes than normal.

One huge difference in this game is you "get" a legendary very early though you cannot use it how youd think. The goofy part of this game is they are what you ride, climb, swim and fly on (weird i know but no my HMS yay!) Learn the art of sandwiches that your legendary pal enjoys while also learning the secrets of them (can help in encountering more pokemon and shiny hunting).

The 3 different stories that you embark on does not need to be done in any order though some will be much harder depending on your level.

Victory road: easy. beat the 8 leaders then fight the elite 4

Path of legends: find all 5 herba mysticas by defeating the 5 titan pokemon

Starfall street is the most boring one imo as you have to weirdly fight the leaders on their corresponding bases. Defeat the 5 bosses and figure out who the mastermind is behind the 5 bullies.

Overall the game could be a 5 had it included more pokemon in the base game, had more challenge to the game and not looked like it was designed in the dark . Still a fun game but honestly pokemon games are getting to be rough lately.

Pokémon Scarlet and Violet
Everyone wanted an open world Pokemon game. I don’t think it worked well. Regardless of being able to go wherever, there was still and order you should do the gyms in. But I found no real direction on which to go to next. I’m fine using the internet to find out if I’m missing a cool rare pokemon from a route, but I don’t want to keep checking to see if I’m heading in the right direction instead of aimlessly wandering wondering if the next area will destroy my Pokemon or being way underleveled for my team. That being said it was an enjoyable game, but suffered from the open world ness everyone wanted without thinking about the implications.

This game is the building blocks for where the Pokemon franchise needs to go in its next mainline game. The game has a great story and great mechanics that add to the usual Pokemon formula, but it feels like the game is lacking in a lot of important areas like graphics and performance.

The open world aspect of this game works really well. It was definitely a breath of fresh air not being bound to a set order of challenges, but the game does a great job of recommending where to go in terms of level progression so you're not wandering into the strongest gym with a highly underleveled team. The different "storylines" of Path of Legends, Victory Road, and Starfall Street also do a great job at measuring your progress while driving their own narratives as well. The respective stories had their own fair balance of corniness and plot twists for Pokemon even though many could see right through Clive's disguise.

The biggest reason why this game gets 3 stars is that the game doesn't really perform up to par with other games on the Switch. The graphics are probably the best the Pokemon franchise had seen up to its release, but there's a lot of better looking (and way better performing) open world games on the Switch that don't suffer as many stutters and visual glitches that Scarlet and Violet did at launch. While many of them were addressed within a few months of release, it didn't really warrant a replay from me. While the DLC looks promising, I didn't buy it so I can't really comment on the DLC's additions to the game.

I may be in the minority, but performance and visual aside, I absolutely adore this iteration of Pokemon!

The open world concept is really fun. The new Pokémon designs are good, the names are punny and it's ultimately a breath of fresh air. The only reason it does not get 5 stats, is because of the level scaling, it felt very awkward, and the occasional glitches. Beyond that, they're fun games.

*This review was written before the DLC of this game was released*
Pokemon has always been quite the franchise. Every generation has had backlash, but not many have had as much as this generation got. Do I think it's deserved? Yes, all of the glitches and bugs ruin the experience quite a bit. However, what I see many less people talk about are the AMAZING positives this game brings us. But let's not get too hasty now, there are flaws to go still. They for some reason have removes some quality of life options, such as set mode, often used as a faux "hard" mode in pokemon games. They made all NPC buildings incapable of entering, which is minor, but is a big fan favorite due to the fact of being able to interact with the world. The open world-ness of the game cannot be ignored, but it can lead to you going into areas you are not supposed to be in. I did that myself, and was in an area with pokemon 20+ levels higher than my own. The gym leaders, team star bases and titan bosses are not ordered, which would make sense for an open world game, but the levels don't change depending on your levels or badges, so its really difficult to go out of "order." The difficulty is really tame throughout the entire game, unless you accidentally go to the final gym right away, until the end where it kind of ramps up. Next, the positives. I ADORE the new pokemon. I think almost every single one would go in the top half of my pokemon list (if I had one.) Notable ones that I love are Garganacl, Annihilape, Meowscarada, Pawmot, Kilowattrel, and way more. The names for most of them are really cheesy but I think its funnier that way. The story is actually.. good? For a pokemon game, its amazing, not quite to the level of Black and White, but easily the second best story in the game, and they had to split it across 3 paths! My favorite is definitely the titan bosses with Arven, but the team star path and gym leader paths are also great!
At the end of the day this is my new favorite pokemon game to date, however I am about to play through Platinum and SoulSilver, so we'll see if it compares to old fan favorites!
