PlayStation 3
2006-11-17
The PlayStation 3 (PS3) is a home video game console developed by Sony Computer Entertainment. The successor to the PlayStation 2, it is part of the PlayStation brand of consoles. It was first released on November 11, 2006, in Japan, November 17, 2006, in North America, and March 23, 2007, in Europe and Australia. The PlayStation 3 competed primarily against Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Nintendo's Wii as part of the seventh generation of video game consoles.
This baby was built to last. Its Blu-ray capabilities were a game-changer, and titles like "The Last of Us" showcased its true potential. However, its early price tag could send a family into financial ruin. It was a console that evolved into a legend over the years.
This was a hefty machine from the moment I turned it on. It was such a massive leap from the 2 to the 3. The Bluetooth controllers alone were staggering. As always it seems with PlayStation an amazing catalog of games to boot.
I bought one of these but I didn't really play that much. I had and Xbox 360 which I likes much more. This basically just was a blue-ray player for me. I did play a game called Resistance on it that I liked. Besides that I felt like PS3 lagged behind Xbox.
Not a playstation guy, but this was a system I wanted. The game catalogue incredible and I felt like I missed out. Loved going to friends to play their PS3.
I finally bought a PlayStation because of Uncharted and I wasn’t disappointed.
Though by the time I bought a PS3, the PS4 was already out, so I didn’t stick with this one for long.
I bought this console as a Last Of Us machine, worked nicely for that. Playstation has always had great exclusives so if anything, the console was worth it just for that.
First system to make me go "HOLY SHIT" when I saw it displayed in the store. They had NBA2K running and I couldn't believe my eyes. When I finally got one along with my new massive 40" HD TV (ha) and played Uncharted for the first time, I knew it was going to be a fun few years.
My first console buying on my own. Had a heartfelt goodbye to my ps2 and traded it in to gamestop for the credit, was so hyped plugging in metal gear 4 and starting the assassins creed series. Was ready to pull all nighters in the dorms with this baby
PS3 and Xbox 360 introduced us to main stream online gaming for consoles. PS3 gave us solid games but I feel this generation of consoles wasn’t necessarily revolutionary like the generation before it
This was the system that introduced me to online multiplayer CoD. Endless hours spent on Ghost in particular for some reason ? Amazing library of games and toward the end of its life cycle, the progress made in the game development was outstanding.
Biggest complaint was the lack of compatibility with other systems. They went with a Unix based system that made everything hard to work around. Great for the system itself, but not for gamers in general.
PS3 was such a let down compared to the PS2. I think Sony was trying something different with this system and it didn't hit like their others have. The graphics on most games looked good and the UI stayed true. Its hard to give a bad review on a system that gave us some of the best Uncharted games but I do what I must.
I, admittedly, was a PlayStation fanboy all the way up until PS3. The only real memories I have of it are playing Madden and NCAA games, racing games, and the fact that I bought two PS3's, both of them died due to a laser issue where discs could no longer be read, so I switched to xbox and that was the end of my time with PlayStation.
I put a few hours on the PS3 in college with some buddies. I mostly played Nintendo and the 360. But the PS3 FIFA tournaments were always a fun time. Especially when I usually won. Good graphics, good size controllers. Good System
