Think battlefield, but on the scale of the entire planet, maybe day z/the division style with some safe non combat zones with traders and merchants. Traversing from one safe zone to another could be done by various vehicles, but they're expensive and rare or on foot, but who knows what dangers lurk outside the gate. The overall objective is to stay alive, but maybe there's some well protected utopia that's the long term goal."
