ok, first of all, we are NOT in the same weight class, so why am I fighting all of these people? Anyway. I really like this game cause its all about learning patterns and knowing attack moves. Its a good boxing game. The series needs to come back one way or another outside the life of smash.
An absolute classic. Oh you think you're good at video games? Prove it. The skill and memorization and persistence this game needed and forced you to have makes it one of the best NES games of all time. The remakes have all been good too but we need a proper Punch Out remake for the Switch.
This game was one I always had difficulty with getting to play. I had to blow on the cartridge and wiggle it to the tightest position against the front of the NES. I loved this game. The jogging in a pink suit chasing your trainer on a bike. The ridiculous size of all fighters except little mac. I remember spending countless hours trying to solve the puzzle of how to beat an opponent. 4 stars!
This is a “git gud” game for me. You are Little Mac, an underdog boxer who’s too short and too light to compete against these giant goons. Punch-Out is a “rinse and repeat” kind of game where you have to remember your opponent’s patterns and use them against them. By the time you get to Mike Tyson (or Mr. Dream), the fights are nigh impossible unless you have those patterns and reflexes on lock down. This game taught me patience. Can’t get too fancy or you’ll end up on the mat while Ref. Mario is counting you to 10 while you viciously smash every controller button there is.
My dog is named after the main character, his name is Mac (Little Mac). Fun game but haven't played it in such a long time. Would love to find a way to play it again.
It is hard to rate this game without the “Mike Tyson” component. While a formidable opponent, Mr. Dream does not strike the same degree of abject terror as facing down the greatest boxer in the known world. For those who dedicated their lives to this game, your hours (days) of work were rewarded with a steep learning curve which ended (harshly for most) with the final boss. Many of us skipped a step and used the cheat code 007-373-5963. I never have knocked Mike down, but I hope to some day. Near the top of my video game bucket list. Sometimes I hum the theme music while sitting at my desk.
Rating: Mike Tyson’s punch out -5 stars
Punch out 4 stars
I've played this game both before and after they pulled Mike Tyson's name from the title. Never before has been fighting broad ethnic and social stereotypes been more acceptable. I also feel like I've learned a lot about boxing. Like you can't do an uppercut without a star, and each opponent will have a bunch of quirky, idiosyncratic moves to decode and exploit.
Unironic five stars from me, and from my BFF, who in his late thirties used to come over to work out his aggression on this game in between breaks running a mayoral campaign— he'd sit down and beat the s*** out of everyone until second Bald Bull, who would beat God in a fistfight.
