Someone independently wrote a Mario game in MS-DOS using turbo pascal. I found an early demo on my 1,000+ Great Games CD, a demo disk I bought from Walmart in the late 90s for $10 (a steal, might do a super post on why that demo disc rocked and was not so awesome at the same time). To avoid the usual Nintendo legal fears, they changed the name of the final game from Mario & Luigi to Super Angelo. What the dev learned from this game was clearly applied to other titles, some of which have been featured on LGR. Charlie the Duck is a beautiful looking platformer, and Sint Nicholas is a Holiday variant using the same underlying mechanics. The dev has listed some of these on steam and via itch.io so make sure to check them out!

This is the only game in the series I played from beginning to end. Was really cool that they had a co-op mode, too. The first level in the game I've probably played 20-30 times because it was just fun and the graphics were so impressive at the time.

My favorite version will always be for the GBA (although the NES version was one of my early favorites, I like the extra dungeons). PS1 version is great, too, but this was a nice update. Very much worth checking out. One day, I may even attempt FF2.
