Metroid: Zero Mission
I'd give this 5 stars for "main game" and 4 stars for 100%.

This is a retelling of the original @metroid with enhanced visuals and quality of life (QoL = save rooms!). It's the definitive way to experience Samus' first adventure if you can't deal with the original NES title which has aged poorly. Some elements first introduced in Super Metroid like Super Missiles and Space Jump are added into the original title, everyone's favorite duo of "Did I not kill you in the previous title" Kraid and Ridely are back and larger than life, taking heavy inspiration from their Super versions. Overall, it's exactly what you want from a Metroid game.

Working against it: a minor gripe but real -- the game absolutely holds your hand with no way to disable it; you will go to a Chozo statue, and it will mark on your map the next place to go. Now, it's not showing you how to get there, but even still, this could annoy purists who want to explore on their own.

Finally, on the 100% front, several of the items require complicated multi-screen, multi-stage Shinespark puzzles that are practically impossible to figure out without a walkthrough. You'll need to charge, store the charge, spark into a slope which will recharge you, store that charge, repeat this a few times across multiple screens in some cases, eventually leading to a sparkball to get to some super missile pack. Oh, and if you DO get 100% of the items, your reward is a final boss that's WAY harder and stronger than the 99% and less version.

Metroid: Zero Mission
I prefer the 2D Metroid games over the 3D Metroid games. And for some reason, this game is at the top for me. I absolutely loved playing this game on my GBA.
