It was supposed to be a slam dunk. MOTION CONTROLS WITH THE WII. But instead of adding to the genius of double dash (best in the series before 8) you took that away and just did motion controls and some mid levels. Nothing exciting, nothing new outside of the obvious thing. This turned me off from playing Mario Kart until 8
The first mario kart to add bikes, motion controls, and added remastered retro tracks!
The game play was finally improved to a point of the handling/vehicle response and drifting being intuitive and not too difficult for the average newcomer to pick up.
The vehicle and character variety improved again with this installment. However, they did not do the best job balancing characters and vehicles to narrow the gap between different options.
The online features of this game alone deserves high praise from me. The map selections are admirable, the Kart customization and characters add depth, and the soundtrack slaps as per usual with Kart games. It's just unfortunate that the online races became filled with hackers so quickly.
This was a must-have game back when the Wii was popular. It's left such a strong impact on my generation that many of us that are casual fans to this day call it the "original" Mario Kart.
I know a lot of people complain about balancing issues, which I agree with for the most part, but you really couldn't lose if you were Funky Kong on the Flame Runner. I definitely liked the amount of effort it took in both Grand Prix mode and Time Trials to unlock all the characters and vehicles, and I wish that level of requirements would have made its way to the newer games.
This one with tilt controls was such a fun experience. It was enough to get my girlfriend at the time (now Mrs. Funk) to get a Wii so we could play online together. Lots of crazy blue shells and shouting over speakerphone. I’m certain it’s during one of these nights that she realized I’m wired differently and yet she still bought in.
If I were to criticize the game, I’d say that the rainbow road (remade in MK8DX) is god awful with the longest falls and the tempting ramps over the giant holes in the track.
First time Mario Kart introduced what I see as gimmicky motion controls. I played this a little bit but it was right in the middle of my gaming hiatus so I don't have huge memories of this game. I did have it on the Wii and I abandoned the Wii steering wheel and bought a Classic Wii controller which made the experience much more enjoyable.
The Wii edition in this venerable franchise is notable for its use of a steering wheel and the motion controls the Wii so desperately liked to use. While that feels more and more like a gimmick as time goes on, it was pretty innovative for its time. While I typically used the Wii Classic Controller, this was another solid entry that gave us an early glimpse into Nintendo's online play and some fantastic tracks that we'd see again in Kart 8 Deluxe.
I remember when I wa showing and had the Wii I had this little rubber wheel I would put my controller in to make me better and being a little kid who wants to drive that was always fun. And the game in general was just such a fun time to spend with my family when I was young. And I would always lose to my dad. I’ll have to do that if I have kids I guess beat them till they quit.
I actually really enjoyed using the steering wheel and equally enjoyed seeing people try to use the steering wheel who couldn't do it properly. Excellent game and a huge graphical improvement IMO over N64 and GameCube versions.
Every Kart game is great. This one introduced motion controls which were more of a novelty to me - I played better without them. The online experience was pretty solid for an era where Nintendo was really struggling online (looking at you, Smash Brawl). It’s not the best Kart but well deserving of 4 stars.
Motion controls were interesting at first, but became more of problem. Once I found out you could use a GameCube controller to play it made the game much better.
Favorite Mario kart game hands down! The advanced tech that can be learned at the fast-paced gameplay with bikes makes it all the more fun. The abundance of characters and lots of strategies can be a lot of fun with 4 friends in a room!
