WELCOME TO MARIO KART.
Its my first mario kart, it's really good, but the problem is the items. They are kind of either really effective or incredibly inneffective. I am glad that it was addressed in later games in the series.
My first Mario Kart game. I played a lot of this with my group of friends in school. Always made sure to use a heavyweight in balloon battle so I could just plow through someone and knock their balloon off. Not the best in the series, but absolutely a core memory for me.
Obviously this one is a classic. Good cast of characters, great maps, and good music. It hasn't exactly aged well at all unfortunately. And frankly Diddy Kong Racing just did it better on the N64.
It was a 5 star game in its time but a 3 star game now since it has aged terribly. So I’ll give it 4, but it’s probably the last home console MK game I would choose to play.
I grew up playing Mario Kart 64, so I have a lot of fond memories of this game. Even though the controls still frustrate me to this day, this game had a lot of iconic tracks that really left a huge impact on Mario Kart as a franchise. Definitely in my top 3 Mario Kart games that I've played.
Going from Super Mario Kart to this was a huge leap. This was grinded for many years before my gaming hiatus. We need a time trial on one of the many maps with shortcuts.
Lots of time spent with my buddies after school on this game. Playing this one in tandem with the SNES version, the experience was mind blowing on the N64.
I'm sure it's actually 5 stars, but I wasn't great at teaching back then so I just enjoyed it some. This was where games became a family affair when I was a kid
I only rented the original Mario Kart and this was the first one I owned. It’s the first game I remember playing 4 player with my 2 brothers and whichever friend was over at the time. We had a blast! Every Mario Kart is a great time - we’d play late into the night on Royal Raceway, Wario Stadium, Rainbow Road and the rest of our faves, then mix it up with some battle mode. Wario was my main, I loved that he could bounce everyone around (probably because I was a scrawny 13 year old at the time 😀). This game got a second life for me in college. Even though double dash was already out, my roommates and I all chose this and played endlessly. Not to mention we made drinking games out of it (everyone drinks on a lightning was one rule). I don’t think it holds up as well today so I almost brought it down to 4 stars but couldn’t do it; it’s too near and dear to my heart.
I was in the hospital as a kid with a ruptured bladder. The hospital had N64s in the extended stay rooms and this was the first game I ever played on the N64. This game made me forget that I was stuck in a hospital bed.
Incredible game! Countless hours playing this when I was younger and enjoyed every second of it. I had to take one star off because of the replayability. This game did not hold up as well as I wish it did.
Am I blinded by nostalgia? Maybe. That won't stop me from rating this 5 stars. Everyone loves to hate on the n64 because of how it aged, but you have to consider the time it was created.
This (along with others like OOT and SM64) were ground breaking visually, and brought on the incredibly fun era of couch co op. Even on our smaller TVs with worse graphics, we spent hours upon hours playing this and smash bros. Sure there are merits and drawbacks to both "eras" of gaming (which is for another discussion), but gaming with your friends and family like this was special.
The courses are all great, even with some of the weird glitches and unintended shortcuts. Honestly those are also really cool to have in a game (to some extent). The iconic rainbow road jump is an awesome example of this. A high risk and reward gamble that is super satisfying to pull off.
Some of the best track music (IMO) in the series. MK8 probably surpasses due to volume of tracks, but perhaps not on a "per track" basis.
The one down side I will mention is that the drifting is very weird and overall controls are a bit tricky to get the hang off. They are sensitive and not the most responsive. But this (like the graphics) seems much worse now only because of comparison and technological advancement.
Also have to shout out the best battle course in all of Mario Kart, Block Fort. The perfect balance of chaotic fun and using skill/strategy.
This was my reintroduction to Mario Kart as I didn't enjoy the SNES version. I enjoyed playing GoldenEye or WCW/nWo with friends but I LOVED Mario Kart. It was always the pick for me when it came to finding something to play. It's racing, it's Mario & friends, & you get to use items as weapons .. what more could you want? Another game I picked back up & played when I bought an N64 a few years ago (& mainly used as a drinking game)
I’d give it a 1 star for all the times I’ve been knocked off rainbow road in 1st by a rogue random shell only to finish in last place but we’re not rating my skill here…
This was my first Kart game. I played it non-stop and thought I was pretty good at it. As an adult, I've learned I am in fact not very good at this game. I don't think it holds up to the updated versions, but it was great for its time.
