You know how the board game Monopoly could temporarily damage friendships for a night? This game has that same effect just with me and my 20-year-old friends. 5/5 stars
As someone who loved this game in 2017, and then abandoned it for years, I can confidently say this game is fun again. Due to its crazy popularity, the community became so insanely competitive and skilled that it actually drove away lots of casual players. However, the dust has seemed to settle, and with the implementation of more refined skill-based matchmaking schemes a few years back, it finally reminds me of the game that I and all my high school friends played on snow days way back when.
This game has one of the worst online modes I have ever experienced, with tiny lobbies and a lack of ways to advance economically online. It feels like Rock Star gave up when trying to make their online play as attractive as other online games like the GTA franchise. That being said, this game also happens to have the best story mode of any game I've ever played. It felt like I was watching a movie while having control over the actions of the main character, reminiscent of the old walking dead storyline games while also implementing a free roam, sandbox-style feel to the story when you don't want to rush through missions. You can explore side quests, and ride through several mid-century biomes, and the attention to detail when designing the beautiful landscape is truly unparalleled. It is a beautiful gaming experience.
Despite peaking in popularity in 2016, this mobile game was nothing close to what it is today. Through the addition of weekly community events, 9 generations of pokemon, legendary and mega raids, worldwide ranked PVP, and much more, this game has become its own and is still only getting better. It still has bug issues and Niantic is taking its time implementing all aspects of the pokemon games into one, I can't wait to see what the future holds for this game and hope to see it's large core of players grow more.
I'm convinced people that don't like this classic are bored people. This game is the golden standard of sandbox games. It allows its users unlimited ability to create, mod, and adventure peacefully alone or with as many friends as they please with the server and realm options.
