Based on the 2012 Sony Pictures Animation movie, Hotel Transylvania puts players as the role of Mavis (teenage daughter of Count Dracula), who must embark on a quest to save her new friend Johnny from the evil master chef Quasimodo (who plans to make him the soup de jour for Mavis' 118th birthday party).

The gameplay for both DS and 3DS versions takes a simplistic side-scrolling platform approach where players must guide Mavis throughout the hotel, defeating a myriad of monsters along the way.

Mavis can also talk to several characters within the hotel to carry out several missions in order to reach Johnny's location. The control pad (and Circle Pad for 3DS) for both consoles control Mavis' movement, while B allows her to jump and holding A allows her to walk.

The A button is also used to interact with the several characters and numerous objects with the hotel. Mavis will eventually unlock special moves (such as the Trance Stare, which freezes monsters in their tracks) as the game progresses, allowing her to move further.

Both versions also contain an Extras menu, containing 10 bonus levels and several concept artworks from the film to unlock throughout the game.

This is an adventure-platformer in which players assume the role of Dracula's daughter on a supernatural quest. As players traverse through side-scrolling levels, they defeat various monsters (e.g., zombies, skeletons, haunted suits of armor) by jumping on top of them. Enemies generally crumble into bones or metal armor parts when defeated; some enemies break apart (“cartoony” heads popping off) and/or tumble off screen. The dialogue includes comical remarks about eating a character (e.g., “How should I prepare you? Perhaps finger sandwiches, made with real fingers? Oh, human meat is such a delicacy!”).
