Hollow Knight is a 2017 Metroidvania action-adventure game developed and published by independent developer Team Cherry. In the game, the player controls the Knight, a nameless insectoid warrior. The Knight explores Hallownest, a fallen kingdom plagued by a supernatural disease. The game is set in diverse subterranean locations, and it features friendly and hostile bug-like characters and numerous bosses. Players have the opportunity to unlock new abilities as they explore each location, along with pieces of lore and flavor text that are spread throughout the kingdom.

Overall theme, art design, music, characters, and story are incredible. Unique, immersive, and enthralling.

A somber, yet peaceful and calming aura mixed with epic exploration and towering bosses to overcome.

Perfect combat system: easy to learn, hard to master.

Challenging and interesting bosses and platforming areas that are very rewarding!

Dark souls meets metroidvania works very well.

Probably the best game I've ever played. I enjoyed every second of the Metroidvania-style gameplay, and I loved how free the game allows you to be. The art direction and characters are super charming, and the hidden lore is fascinating.

My wife teased me when I kept saying this game was gorgeous, but I’m right! The hand-drawn look is amazing! I love the atmosphere they created, it feels creepy, melancholic, tense, and funny at times. The sense of exploration is nearly perfect - I enjoyed getting lost time after time, then somehow managing to find the mapmaker NPC. Combat is challenging and satisfying. I got to about 106% completion (out of 115% or so, due to DLC) but everything beyond that was way too tough for me.

My original review is below. I went from 2 to now 4 stars. After a 4 year break I tried it again. I am enjoying it so much more now. Loving so much more about it and able to sort of figure some stuff out. We will see how long it lasts though.

I wanted to like it. Great atmosphere but too hard for my liking.
