i have played this game more times than i can count. ive played it on every system possible. i absolutely love halo 1. nothing could prepare my 11-12 year old brain for the epic twist in this game, turning it from a regular alien slaying fps, to the borderline horror game that it becomes. not to mention that it has one of the all time great multiplayers and started an absolute revolution in the fps/multiplayer community. xbox live might not've been a thing until halo 2, but me and my friends were finding ways to "work" our ways into massive over the internet LAN parties and had a blast doing so

Played this one for @video-game-book-club (which if you're not a member of... join it!)

The game is honestly not bad, but it's not great. And unlike a lot of older games I don't really think this is a function of its age.

Probably my least favorite thing about the game is that most of the weapons hit like wet noodles, and the only one that doesn't (the shotgun) has like no range. This problem rears its ugly head on the third level, Truth and Reconciliation, where you're supposed to clear out this room of Covenant before a door opens up allowing you go to to a hangar and finish the level. Problem is many of the enemies are far away on the upper levels of the room, and it takes FOREVER to kill them. And time is not on your side here given that Jackals LOVE to spam the charged plasma pistol shot. I guess I just remember this being a lot more of a shoot-em-up style game than it ended up being and I found myself frequently annoyed by how long it took to kill a lot of the enemies in the game and how often the game loaded you up in big open areas with tons of enemies sniping you from far away while not providing you the tools to really fight back.

I've got a few other individual complaints, but to not leave the impression that it's all bad, there are quite a few things that the game does very well. One of my favorite things is how the game uses subtle lighting and enemy placement to guide the player where to go, where a lot of modern games use literal yellow paint to accomplish the same thing (Looking at you FFVII Rebirth). And in the rare circumstances where you are in an open area and it's not clear where to go the game will provide a Nav Point.

All in all not as great as I remember, but not as bad as I've heard people on reddit say

This is tough. Objectively, this game hasn't aged well. I didn't play it until 2017 because shooters really aren't my thing. Keep that in mind here too, I don't play a lot of shooters, just not my jam.

What Halo has going for it is a decent narrative (shamless plug for the VGBC discussion; we didn't talk a whole lot about the plot, but it's still a step up from other shooters), and fresh ideas that would inspire and redefine the genre, so it almost has to be judged on what came after, where we'd be without it. I dislike making that a major factor of a review, but sometimes a game is simply so foundational that it's hard to overlook.

If you've been living under a rock, Halo: Combat Evolved is the first in a series with... many (the exact count is debatable) sequels and spin-offs. You play as Master Chief battling your way through a strange planet and surrounding ships/stations. Along the way you will do battle with ... a grand total of 8 unique enemies. Seriously, that's it. Your trusty AI Cortana (who is really the onboard AI from the ship you arrived on, but kind of becomes yours) will accompany you on the journey.

You'll pick up a variety of weapons, some human using traditional bullets/slugs/rockets, and some made by your enemies, the covenant, that typically use plasma energy. You can carry two, but there's no dual-wielding (not until the sequel). Careful experimention (or desperation when you run low on ammo) will reveal different weapons work better against different enemies, so there can be some interesting decisions, though most of the time I found myself just going with "what do I have that I like using" because just like the enemies, there isn't a huge variety, and you're further constrained by what you can find ammo for.

As you navigate the levels, you may find yourself needing or having the option to use one of 3 drivable vehicles, though I hesitate to apply that description to one of them. The iconic Warthog, where your buddies or NPC-controlled marines can hop in the back and shoot things while you... hmm.... again, I hestitate to say "drive." The Warthog steers so slowly, even @joob can finish a game in the time it takes to turn. The Ghost and banshee are much better, but also rare.

Fundamentally, the game is very short and very repetitive. It does mix things up halfway through when it goes from 4 to 7 types of enemies (the 8th won't appear until the very end), but still, it's rough around the edges. It's hard to actively recommend this game in 2024, but if you're interested in the series as a whole, it won't take you that long to blast through it; though I'd seriously consider just putting it on easy or even watching a recap on YouTube and jumping straight into the sequel.

This is the first game I had my first real LAN party with. The game in itself is awesome but the LAN experience is some of my favorite memories. Dragging all those gigantic heavy TVs into a friend's living rooms, hooking up those bulky Xboxes with their ginormous controllers. Those were the days. And the Flood used to scare me to death!

I say that this game has not aged most favorably, and I stand by that. My ratings tend to favor "at the time" however, unless there is something truly egregious. 2 will always make strides forward, but this game was HUGE in bringing upgrades to FPSs and showing Microsoft was a serious player at the time (of course the Halo situation now is also indicative of the opposite, but that's a story for another day). They created a universe here and successfully at that.
I wasn't there until after my brother moved in with me in college and I got to tinker with his Xbox, but even two years into the cycle, and even with knowing the 360 was already on the Horizon, looking up and seeing the Halo Ring was something to behold, even on a 19" CRT TV back in the early 00s.
FPSs may be the games that have suffered the most over time. I say that, but Doom still rules, Portal also. I dunno. There are plenty that haven't aged well.

Even not aging well this is a 5 star game.

I know. It’s probably not a bad game, but I am currently entering year 27 of therapy because of it and GoldenEye ruining my adolescence

So, trying to go back to this one nowadays is the definition of the "motherf***er you are hard to look at" meme, both visually and the more dynamic gameplay you're used to in the sequels. However, the story is amazing, and without this we wouldn't have the rest of the Halo franchise that exists today 🔥

This game was my introduction to Xbox (as I'm sure it was for many others). I believe this was the first FPS that I played since Goldeneye and what a staggering leap forward it was! Granted, dual analog sticks were a big part of that. But the world that Bungie Studios built was so intriguing and inviting. And the story was actually quite impressive, particularly the twist partway through where you learn that the Halo ring's true purpose was to wipe out all sentient life in order to remove all source of food for the Flood.
And it's the Flood that really elevated the game - it was a more terrifying enemy with how they utterly swarmed you. Plus, that's when you got the shotgun which is the best gun in the game.

But what really pushed this game into the stratosphere was the multiplayer! Single player was fun for a time, but multiplayer is what made me, and my family, and my friends want to return over and over again to this game.

However, as groundbreaking as this game was (and without it, it's quite possible that Xbox would not have survived), it doesn't hold up all that well today. The warthog is atrocious to control (which is thankfully fixed in the sequels), the enemy variety is limited (only 8, half of which aren't seen until the last half of the game), and most of the guns (particularly the covenant weapons) are underwhelming (particularly when compared to later entries). It was also easy to get lost at times (particularly the original version and its poor lighting).

If I hadn't played this when it first came out, I'd probably only be able to give it 3 stars. But due to my nostalgia for it and my appreciation of its importance to gaming, I think 4 stars is warranted. It's a solid game, but the sequels is where the franchise truly shines!

I played this, but it wasn't until I played Halo 2 that I was hooked. It was a fun game I enjoyed for the multiplayer, but I wasn't in love with the campaign.

Great game. The intro to the Flood was just awesome

Halo: Combat Evolved
The original Halo can’t be beat by it ingenuity and creativity in terms of gameplay and Level design. Most levels have wide open empty spaces that give the Ring like structure a sense of eeriness and mystery. The introduction of the Covenant, Flood, and Forerunners is a brilliant one that creates a long lasting impact, and explored who and what each faction is. The first time I played this game I instantly fell in love with the gameplay and sandbox. There are so many weapons to play around with and ways to kill enemies, that there is no one correct way to play the game. You are encouraged to play the game your own way, wether it be sniping enemies from afar, or cramming a warthog into a hallway where a warthog should not fit, the possibilities are quite literally endless.

In terms of Halo reviews,
I think we’re just getting started.

This was a great game. It's the first game that my cousin and I ever sat down and completed. Also the first time I ever pulled an all nighter to play video games. This was so unique, and a bunch of fun. Also was a great multiplayer. I didn't have an original XBox, but my friends did so I played with them when possible.

The only reason to own an OG Xbox imho. I have a hard time thinking of any predecessor quite like this game. The co-op and PvP were both great experiences!
