My first experience with a console FPS. This game was one of those games where all your friends said they were great at it and won all the time until you finally all got together to play and found out that all of you were outmatched by the one friend who didn’t trash talk at all. The single player game was a lot of fun and was replayable by ramping up the difficulty to get new tasks and tougher enemies. But multiplayer was where it shined. Lots of cheat codes to put in to make matches fun, and of course the no map option to really flex how good you were at the game (I was not that good bee tee dubz).
Awful by modern standards, but in it's day, it was the absolute best and in my humble opinion, we might not have the first person shooters that we know and love today if not for the forbearers like doom and Goldeneye.
Not gonna beat a dead horse about how good this was in the past. I’d love for it to come back but I think I’d rather not have my good memories ruined by outdated controls. The OG of first person shooters.
Back when this game came out on N64, it was unmatched. The single player campaign was lengthy, complex, and a blast. The multiplayer was so so good, and customizable in so many ways to get different styles of deathmatches going. My dad, brother, and I would play this for hours upon hours. We even built a cardboard divider so you couldn't watch the other player and figure out their location just by looking at their screen.
They re-released this game for Wii, which I never got the chance to play, and there is a rumor of a remake for Switch, which would be incredible, but we shall see. Should you go back and play GoldenEye if you didn't play it back in the day? Absolutely not - it won't hold up. But it was great for its time, and if they re-release, I'll grab it for sure.
In 1997 I would have given this a perfect score, unfortunately it doesn’t hold up so well today. Back then there was nothing better than getting together with 3 siblings/friends, ordering a pizza and throwing down in Goldeneye. It’s one of the few FPS games I absolutely loved. I was deadliest at complex with remote mines, but I enjoyed the huge variety of weapon options for multiplayer.
This game helped put co-op shooters on the map. It had fun game modes, a great and memorable campaign, and was as fun to play as it was frustrating. This was one of the first games I ever owned growing up, and will be a core memory in my gaming history.
I feel like I would probably have given it an easy 5 stars back in the day. It was good, and it was one of the few games I could get people to come over and play. But I don't want to give it too much nostalgia points and over rate it either.
This was tough. This game was groundbreaking and just downright incredible! I still own my original copy, but man it just doesn’t hold up. Trying to play this game now takes away from the original nostalgia…
I didn’t send this in as one of my top games, but that was an oversight on my part! This was clearly one of the most influential console shooter games of all time. The single player mode is challenging and allows different paths to clear the levels. For a 64 bit game, it made you feel like you were a part of the story. The game rose to new heights in multiplayer mode with multiple game variations and very good balance (as long as you didn’t allow oddjob (who I misremembered as being nick nack… why was he so short?!?!). I must have replayed the dam level 100 times. This game separated rare from the other game makers at the time.
The one game where I didn't mind running the story mode if no one else was around, but loved running a FFA against the boys. So many late nights going match after match. My personal favorite memory of the game is hearing a friend sing TLC's "Waterfalls" while standing on a waterfall, killing us one by one as we all ran through the door/opening trying to kill him.
The legend of FPS games! Truly a revolutionary icon of the gaming world and a significant turning point in multiplayer action. Birthday parties and sleepovers were never the same after this one . . .
