Game Boy
1989-07-31
The Game Boy is an 8-bit handheld game console developed and manufactured by Nintendo. The first handheld in the Game Boy family, it was first released in Japan on April 21, 1989. The console was released in North America later the same year, then in Europe in late 1990.
I’ll say this for the GameBoy - it was nice to have something to do on long car rides.
I had the most fun with Ninja Turtles and Pokémon Yellow; but this system definitely hasn’t aged well!
A lot of the Gameboy library holds up better than the N64 and PS1 library IMO. It was so mins blowing at the time to have something like this on the go. Plus it still has the best boxart for any console ever.
Remember sitting in the car at night holding the screen up so the lights from cars behind would light my tetris game. I can play games and I don't have to be in my living room?
Got the GB as a hand me down after my cousin got a GBC, fell in love with Pokémon on here, played my first GTA game. It was hours of car trips spent playing and beating games
There was a good period of time where this thing was the longest running, highest selling system. Was it a cruddy screen and monochrome? Yup. Did it matter? Nope. As is so often the case Nintendo is behind technologically but their software more than makes up for it.
I feel like history rightly looks back on this as the winner over the Game Gear though. The game's don't need excessive bits and colors. Heck, some of them weren't even that long.
A perfect Tetris machine, great Mario titles, an all-time Legend of Zelda, wholly disruptive Pokémon (again one I didn't play but I respect), a canonical Metroid, and hundreds more. The games are so good and iconic that Nintendo kept slapping Game Boy units onto systems to play more.
Fun fact, I didn't even have one in my youth, I was happily a Game Gearer. The majority of my time playing a Game Boy in my youth was either at the Dentist's office where they had one or at my buddy's house where we would exchange said Game Gear and Game Boy.
If nothing else you have to respect the historical impact of this.
This transformed gaming into what it is today. Now this is a really bad thing to play on but for its time it was very advanced. This has a lot of og games on it.
Looking back, this is far from a perfect system but for starting Nintendo's handheld consoles and giving the world Pokemon, I give it 5 stars. It had many other classic games as well. I remember struggling to play on long car rides without the light attachment - good times.
I played multiple games on this, after it was already outdated, mostly pokemon games. However this system transformed how people played games due to the ability to game on the go! That alone is worth 4 stars.
I loved my gameboy. It's actually the only one I ever owned. I played Turtles, Mega Man, Wario. The 4 AA batteries to play was a big draw back. I remember several arguments about whether I took the batteries out of XYZ (I always had). Then you couldn't really play in the dark without a couple of different attachments. I could take it anywhere though, and that helped may day care survivable.
I still have the Tetris music in my head. I still have the system even though the screen is a little worse for wear. Groundbreaking stuff back in the day!
My first experience ever with video games was with the Game Boy. It was at my grandparents house and it was always a race out of my siblings to see who could get their hands on it first. The Game Boy will always hold a special place in my heart.
My first system and we loved it! We only had Tetris but that didn’t matter. This was how we spent long trips in the car. Later on we got Pokémon games and this bad boy played them flawlessly!
