Mother, officially known outside of Japan as EarthBound Beginnings, is a 1989 role-playing video game developed by Ape and Pax Softnica and published by Nintendo for the Famicom. It is the first entry in the Mother series. It is modeled on the gameplay of the Dragon Quest series, but is set in the late 20th-century United States, unlike its fantasy genre contemporaries. Mother follows the young Ninten as he uses his great-grandfather's studies on psychic powers to fight hostile, formerly inanimate objects and other enemies. The game uses random encounters to enter a menu-based, first-person perspective battle system.

I never even heard of Earthbound/Mother before Super Smash Bros. 64. I assumed each game in the series starred Ness but apparently not...
This game is super weird! It starts off with you fighting a lamp and a doll (apparently cause of a poltergeist). I may not have known what to expect going into this game; but that's definitely nowhere close to what I would have guessed.
I was totally confused by this game which I find typical of NES-era RPGs (they definitely didn't hold your hand back then)!
I'll give it two stars though since the mother will make pizza for me anytime I want, haha.

For the first title of the MOTHER series this one is a mix bag. It's easily one of the harder rpg games at the time with random enemy encounters, horrible navigation and maps. You have to do a lot of grinding for exp and cash to get the defensive equipment. Without a guide you will struggle a lot especially item management since each character can only hold about 10 items including equipped/key items.

As the positive the music is s good variety from jazz to rock. The setting being a modern instead of a fantasy world is a refreshing view.
