This is quite simply the best racing game of the n64 era. Being able to have 3 different types of vehicles on the same course was a game changer. The characters are fun, the races are well balanced, and the music is especially catchy. Years later it still holds up.
My friends and I used to get into massive multiplayer contests that would stretch on into the wee hours of the morning. For some reason this game doesn't get repetitive or too frustrating. The game also leaves enough room to grow and improve. I am looking forward to getting back into it now that I am older and (hopefully) wiser.
Gotta say this was probably the superior Kart racer on the N64. Between the adventure mode and the battle mode, the different modes of travel, and the map design and music, I can't say there's much that could be improved. Some of those bosses straight up cheated, though!
This one holds a special place in that it was the first N64 game I was able to really play through. While the racing mechanics may not have been quite as refined as Mario Kart 64 (and even that is debatable), it had a 1-2 player adventure mode that was unmatched and a choice of vehicles to use was also something MK hadn't gotten to yet. This is at the top of my wishlist for an HD remaster and/or addition to N64 Online.
Mario Kart 64 will always get all the accolades when you compare the 2 and they are pretty similar.
But this is still a great and if youve played any cart racing games before you already know what to expect.
With new vehicles to unlock, boss battles and a free roam island while in story it just felt right.
Being able to race cars, hover crafts and planes is really fun and a nice twist on the mario kart model and it was just as addictive.
And is the 8th best selling game on the Nintendo 64
And I'm so happy to have it in my collection.
It's just a shame that this never got a sequel like so many other games developed by RARE that got left by the way side when Microsoft purchased them in 2002.
The game was however given remake / remaster and was released on the Nintendo ds in 2007
This was my cousins “go to” racing game on the 64. We loved the races and variety of vehicle types. The battle mode was fun., my favourite was the dinosaur eggs game!
I'd say I've actually put more time into this than any Mario Kart. Our s such a good racing game, and it deserves to be brought back, either through the Switch expansions as a port, or a fully realized new version!
I've never met a person that didn't enjoy this game. This game had 20 levels that could be completed in a kart, raft, or airplane. That would be difficult today to create such encompassing levels. I'm hopeful for a one day sequel or at least bring it to the Switch Expansion.
Thanks Microsoft and Rare for ensuring that we never see an update to this one. Unlike every other Kart ripoff this works because of the different race styles.
