Dark Souls
This one has the best story, with some of the most memorable NPCs and bosses. This one also has the best world/level design. The way everything is interconnected was executed very well. Not counting Elden ring that was just a completely different scale, this one did the best job having multiple paths you could take, that weren't just isolated areas.

This was also the first one where they introduced often forgotten element of the difficulty of these games. That is, if this area is too hard, go somewhere else and then come back later when you are more powerful. Sometimes people forget that and keep throwing themselves at a challenge over and over, unnecessarily. That repetitive grinding is necessary in some cases to improve and overcome some challenges in the souls series, but they have always done a good job over giving players a variety of different options/methods to beat the game as a whole.

I also only played the remastered version, so I understand some of the graphics and camera issues. Even on the remastered version, there are times were the game feels a bit slow and clunky.

I would rank this one above DS2 and Demon Souls solely for how iconic it is, and that is not to say that wasn't earned. They scratched the surface of a great formula that would be perfected in the future games.

The level design and game concept were great, but the controls were far too clunky to be accessible. I'm glad FromSoft kept working and improving the concept.

I put this game off FOREVER. Thought people were crazy for liking it, but in the back of my mind I really wanted to get it. I wanted to like it. In theory it’s the exact kind of game I love, but I would just give up after an hour each time I played it. Thankfully I picked it up on the Switch and MONTHS later I finally got into it. It clicked! Being on the hybrid, portable console… with the ability to suspend whenever i needed (some souls fans will probably curse me for that, but hey it worked for me in my life phase). This game is incredible. The level design is pretty much unmatched, in my experience. The joy of discovering shortcuts and elevators that show you the genius of the interconnected word. I won’t say anything that hasn’t already been said but once you find the groove and get over learning curve (fighting cowboy on YouTube is a great place to learn some things or get unstuck if you are open to that), this game is a masterpiece. Don’t get me wrong, it has flaws and is a product of its time… but it sucked me in. I am forever a From Software and Soulsbourne fan, now.
