I feel that this is the iteration in which they perfected the overall difficulty (outside of summons and what not), especially for the boss fights. This is what Dark Souls is known for, and they did a perfect job making it a rewarding experience that I have played through more than any other souls game.
When it came out it was the best looking souls game (trumped by Elden ring now of course), and I think still has the best soundtrack in the series, particularly for boss fights. Two of my favorites in the entire series are the Abyss Watchers and the Twin Princes.
Although the story is a bit convoluted, it puts a nice wrap on the main souls series, and had 4 unique endings, increasing replayability.
The DLC was similar quality with more great bosses, and a epic final battle.
If I can think of any flaw it would be the somewhat linear nature of the game, but there are enough branching paths and optional areas to make that point negligible. After playing Elden ring, I also somewhat appreciate the smaller size and more linear paths for replayability sake, but it is a balance (topic for another day).
Souls 3, amazing game. Probably my favorite thus far in the series. Elden Ring is next on my play list so I may need to come back and update this.
This game took the best parts of 1 and 2 and combined it into one. It was unforgiving like 1 but it looked and felt great like 2. The combat mechanics surpassed was 2 did, which is why its my favorite to date.
And then there was fire. DS3 is easily the best of the Dark Souls games imho - everything from how the world is connected and overlaps to the weapons, specs, combat, and weapon arts leave this title begging to be played again and again. The game makes several improvements on the franchise over DS2, doing away with the cruel health nerf every time you die. The bosses are punishing, the world is forlorn and beautiful, and the player has to discover for themselves their purpose and next steps.
