A classic, easy learning for getting someone new into board games. Not the type of strategy that I excel in, but plenty of opportunities to work with an opponent or cut them off at the knee and prevent their victory!
I played this game for the first time about 8 years after starting to play Tabletop Games as a serious hobby. I had heard bad things because of bad experiences that friends had. Personally, I really enjoyed it. I think it depends on who you play with, you can play this as a race for points game or you can play this as a mess-with-other-players game, I prefer the former and when played that way it was a lot of fun.
I tried to not let my recency bias affect my rating for this game. I used to love this game, but some of the main mechanics have worn on me. The beginning randomness of choosing your spots on resources can screw you over before the game has started. The dice rolls to determine resource distribution add a fun, but also frustrating component.
This may be the most gateway of all the gateway board games. Some strategy, but not to difficult and don't have break your brain planning out your moves. Highly recommend this game for newcomer to the board game world.
A German made tabletop game. All about gathering resources and building stuff. If yoy want to destroy friendships, play this game. In all seriousness, this game is pretty fun. What I consider to be the Renaissance if tabletop
This is the game that got me really into gaming.
I love strategy, planning, and taking my time with these building games.
There are many expansions, redesigns, and such. But my original still in its "Settlers of Catan" box holds me.
This is the gateway board game to the world outside of classics like Monopoly or Scrabble and for good reason. It's simple enough for board game newbies to learn with enough strategy and depth to stay fun and interesting still today.
