Baldur's Gate III
Baldur's Gate III
I'm not far into the game but I'm far enough to give it five stars and say that I get it. 2023 was an all-time year for gaming. I'm astounded at the dev team being able to capture the openness of a D&D game to this degree and with this level of precision. I would almost say it's too open but that's exactly it, you can't make it too open because that's what the game is.

Baldur's Gate III
Way too early review.

To start I have never played any form of D&D. Not that I never wanted to or think I wouldn't like it, I just never came across the opportunity to play. With that being said I am ten hours in and I am liking the story and play so far. I know that as I play longer I will learn more about what I am doing and should be doing compared to what I know now. In my head I do a lot of comparing this game to Elden Ring. They are nothing alike but I went into buying a really hyped up game from a developer I have never played before (or any "Souls" game) to loving Elden Ring and the style of game. I am in the same realm now; never played anything like D&D before and beginning to like it and learn along the way. I can definitely see this taking 100 hours to beat but not because it drags out but because of all the quests and side things to do (much like ER). I plan on doing another review once I beat the game and know more of what I am doing. Much like my beloved Elden Ring, I feel like this is a good game for a novice of the genre to hop into and learn. I imagine my second run through will be more fun than my first since I will probably know what I am doing at that point. More to follow later....

I have 60+ hours in this game in my first play through. Definitely plan on doing dark urge for the first time on stream.

Baldur's Gate III
I think this game is fantastic. The story is entertaining, the gameplay is well executed, and its pretty to look at. It does a great job of translating the D&D 5E ruleset to a video game, making changes that make sense for it not being a table top RPG. The decisions that you make throughout the game actually matter. There were a few times were I took a break from the game to legitimately think about the decision I was about to make, one of which came back to bite me in the ass. And that was amazing to me. I figured there'd be some repercussions from that decision, but was pleasantly surprised at how much it really screwed with me later. I recently read about a cat that you can get adopted in Act 3, but only if you made a specific choice back in Act 1. You can play the knight in shining armor, or go the main villain route. Nothing breaks the story. While I don't personally like every single companion (looking at you Wyll), they are all well thought out and can serve as an important part of your party. While there were some references to the original two games, they are not required to have played to enjoy this game. It's a standalone story that doesn't need the originals to be enjoyable. I would definitely recommend this game to anyone who likes fantasy RPGs. Now I'm off to officially start my second playthrough...

Baldur's Gate III
My parents played both of the original Baldur's Gate games, and I've run through the actual module with them as well, so being able to play this new release is a big deal for me. The graphics are stunning and the way spells are visualized is beautiful. The voice acting and sound design really draw me into the story. The story itself is amazing with so much variety and replayability, and the co-op mode really feels like a campaign playing with friends and trying to figure out who would be best for certain roles, but sometimes having to be like "Welp, guess the barbarian is doing the talking.", because sometimes that's just how it is in a campaign. Definitely reccomend giving this a playthrough.

Baldur's Gate III
The first Baldur’s Gate game not made by BioWare. I wasn’t expecting it to be quite the same or even as good, but Larian Studios has blown my expectations away. Based on D&D5e, they have created an amazing game with so much potential. Great storyline and great gameplay so far. They also kept the pause if you want and select or play in real time.
