I don't believe this will be a bad game at all. I get the basic understanding, but with most new games, I just need to see how certain moves will benefit my play. This will probably sit in the filler category. Got an extra half hour to mess around? This will be the game for that. I'm looking forward to getting into it.

Do I like Roguelikes? No. Do I like Poker? No. Do I enjoy this game? Absolutely.

No knowledge of Poker is necessary, you just have to be patient with the RNG and hope you occasionally get lucky. It's a fun game, easy to pick up, hard to put down, but you can hop in and out of games as if it's nothing.

Balatro is subtle. I kept hearing that it's a Rogue-Like Poker Game and I couldn't wrap my head around what that even meant. How do you improve and re-run or change tactics to do something different? How do you buff your weapons or unlock new powers? It's a poker game for God's sake.

I really struggled with my first 4 or 5 runs. I started to see the Rogue-Like elements, but I also started to get that early Rogue-Like frustration. The requirements were difficult for the cards I was pulling, I didn't understand the strategy or even what all of the different power ups really did.

There is probably a site I could go to for help, but I'm not an RTFM guy, I'm a bang-your-head-against-it-until-it-works guy. I could have quit completely about 2 hours in and that's why this gets 4 stars. I don't usually require a lot of hand holding, but a little more training could be helpful.

Once I got past the learning curve and really got the hang of the different cards everything opened up. I started seeing new Joikers and Decks unlock, I figured out card positioning, I started to be able to plan my next rounds ahead of time. I still rarely got past Ante 7 and into 8. It took me about 20 hours of play time (an embarrassing number of rounds) to get my first win. But those 20 hours flew by and I don't see it slowing down anytime soon.

Great game recommendation by the Cr3w! I'm rarely disappointed in games recommended by @laughatbrian @funkstylee or @dan and they hit another home run with this one.

I'm amazed at what people's creativity is able to do. To somehow turn poker into this astounding roguelike is fantastic. You can bang out a few hands or a run in a little time. Very digestible. Everyone needs to try this.

For $15, it's a game that quickly becomes a very good investment and something to get lost in. If you enjoy Texas Hold 'Em and enjoy dungeon crawlers, it's a great game to pick up.

Balatro stands as a testament to the genre's potential for innovation, offering a fresh and immersive journey for strategy enthusiasts seeking both depth and enchantment in their gaming adventures.

Roguelike deckbuilder (if that makes sense) built around standard playing cards and jokers, where you play poker hands to earn chips, in order to win rounds and keep advancing. Games play quick, so it's a great one to have on the go on the Switch or Steam Deck. Has a ton of replay value with the amount of new content you can unlock as you play, the combos that the jokers can make, the different modified decks, the ways you can manipulate the deck, the "stakes" (difficulty levels) etc.

Worth every dime.
