This dude should have stayed in his grave because this game was horrible!
The game has an interesting premise of being able to turn into different animals once you collect 3 floating blue orbs (which I think appear after eliminating a certain amount of enemies?). Every time you collect an orb, you power up (however there's an annoying delay when this happens leaving you exposed to enemy hits).
The game is ridiculously hard though; I was only able to beat it due to generous usage of the rewind feature (fortunately it's not a long game, probably because of how difficult it is).
The controls are awful and I hated the auto side-scrolling.
Unless you have to play this game for a C3 quest, you're much better off playing pretty much any other game!
Seeing this game in arcades blew my mind as a kid. It was amazing seeing the guy transform into a beast. The game is still ok to play now.
***UPDATED REVIEW***
This is actually NOT a good game. Altered Beast is a perfect example of "what a cool idea" to "this game kinda sucks". I finally completed this game today on my RetroPie because I realized I never completed it. I've probably inserted about $40 worth of quarters into this game back in the day and I only made it to level 2. It's hard. Like, brutally hard because the controls stink.
If you don't know, the whole point of this game is to move along the very slow moving levels, collect 3 power-ups which make your character stronger each time with the last one eventually turning him into a beast with super powers and sorta invincible. You got the Wolf, the Dragon, the Bear, the Tiger, and finally a Golden Wolf. At the end of each level you fight some cool looking monster as your fully altered beast form. It's a really cool idea. But it just doesn't work. The game is slow, boring, and repetitive. It looks great, sounds great, but other than that, it's blah. I'm a little annoyed right now because I thought I really liked this game but nope. I can admit that it isn't good. Thank you.
Rise from your grave... wait if you're in a grave just stay there. I'm too fat to out run Zombies. This game came packed with the sega and will forever be linked with the sega too me even more so than sonic. I remember playing this game at the arcade and going to my friend Salvy's house and playing it on his Genesis. As a kid I saw no diffrence as a adult. I see barely any diffrence. Compared to the Arcade the colors are toned back. Less vibrant. The voice over a little more grainy and less clear. Other than that. No diffrence. It was the first time I saw a legit port look like the legit game. If you've never played Altered Beast. It's a side scrolling, level mover level up beat em up. Where the protagonists goes though stages of hell to save his special lady friend. It is truly a master piece of early gaming that used every effort the sega had to offer that the time. It gets a little wild where this game is avalible. Sega Genesis, ps2, dreamcast( Japan) Xbox, Xbox 360, pc, ps3, wii and switch. Now there was a sequel to this game. But its nothing to write home about. It's like a dollar store god of war. But I wouldn't kick it out of bed.
This game managed to be exceedingly difficult but not overwhelmingly irritating. Truly a sweet spot in classic video games. Part of the fun was wondering if it would take 1000 hits to defeat a boss or four. And we can all agree that the bear's "special power" was bad breath, right?
